Britain’s welfare system ‘unfit for purpose’ with millions struggling, experts warn

  1. Ian Dunked in Shit and Theresa Coffey have a lot to answer for…..the system is shutter now than it ever has been

  2. They don’t care. Their answer to it is “just get a job”. People who were born into money and had all the connections and opportunities handed to them can’t possibly fathom why people have to rely on benefits.

Give the lot of them basic benefits for a month or two and a shitty one room bedsit to live out of and see how quickly things change.

  3. Unfit for the purpose of providing welfare for those who need support during tough times. Completely fit for the purpose of creating an underclass of workers who are so poor and harried they’ll start being forced to do the jobs we used to make immigrants do.

  4. ‘unfit for purpose’ for actual humans yes.

‘bang on and working exactly as intended’ for the tories.

never forget that the conservatives have been called out MULTIPLE times for violating human rights of long term ill and disabled residents. which of course, Patel dismissed as purely “political attacks”.

anybody wondered why they have such a hard on for “updating” the human rights bill? yeah.

  5. The vast majority of British people believe that the welfare system pays for drug dealers and users along with people who make the dole a lifestyle choice. The same people believed that they payed massive amounts to the EU in their taxes. This is never stated as such by governments as the figures and breakdown would support this not being the case. However , coupled with the Daily Mail and urban myths the belief is entrenched in the minds of the population. It is only when people lose their jobs and expect help from a system that apparently allows your rent/ mortgage to be paid and hundreds in child benefits paid that fails to be actually the case do they understand. This works in two ways , it is a wake up call that the narrative is a fairy tale or for some they rant about a refugee from Mali living in Kensington with four kids on welfare living in millionaire row. They don’t understand their savings have to be used first, they don’t understand how small the benefit entitlement is and that job centres do not help with getting a job, for that to happen you are sent to an agency. They in turn offer you a Tuesday night shift at four in the afternoon for one shift.
Reality, fear factor, welfare facts. When so many moan about the welfare budget and demand cuts they don’t like it when you point out that pension payments are included in the welfare budget. It needs to be pointed out that you don’t get enough money to buy a fuck off t.v, you don’t get your council tax paid, they don’t pay your rent and it isn’t anyone’s idea of a lifestyle choice.

  6. One of the most popular Tory policies though. Says a lot about the petty, short-sighted mentality of the general public.

  7. social welfare system – unfit for purpose

    NHS – unfit for purpose

state education system – unfit for purpose

legal aid – unfit for purpose

Huge success for the private profit-driven company that calls itself “the Conservative Party” – they’ve managed to stay in power for most of the past 42 years and slowly siphon off the nation’s wealth into their own pockets and the pockets of a tiny 1% while, at the same time, gradually destroying all the steps forward in creating a fairer, more equal society introduced by post-war Labour governments. The end goal is to get us right back to pre-Victorian levels of inequality, where nearly all property was owned by a tiny few while the vast majority of the populace was perpetually on a knife-edge of homelessness and starvation.

  8. That’s how we like it in Britain. We shoot ourselves in the foot and will never admit it. But the one saving grace… knowing others are struggling more.

  9. I think it was about twenty years ago I was contacted to fill in my form for some child benefit the govt were handing out if your kids were at school. I was ok at the time and said, honestly, thanks but no thanks. Well, they wouldn’t let it go! Nag,nag, nag ( great record by the way).
Filled in form ,free money. What followed this? Every year and it was every year. A payment followed by a letter saying I had too much paid then actually not enough then a payment received that wasn’t on any documents received. This went on, kids left school and three years later a letter saying they overpaid me by five hundred pounds and I was to give them it back!
It still occasionally rears its ugly head. I contacted them once. I simply said that I provided the info requested and their dept calculated the amount. I hadn’t made a mistake , they had. I refused to pay and hoped to have a day in court when the overpayment could be explained to me and the reason why I received letters every year with different amounts being credited to me and different amounts actually paid to me. I also wanted to know why they insisted on a payment I never wanted in the first place.
I understand the complexity of such a venture , they shouldn’t start things like this if they don’t understand their own system. Universal credit is the same.

  10. It’s been unfit for years, at least since the UN had to send their rapporteur on inequality and human rights to do a write-up on the actual state of the country. Of course that was quietly ignored at the time. Well done Tories and the voters who enabled this FOR A FUCKING DECADE.

  11. Well yeah, have you never met a Tory voter? Or anyone who insults benefits.

They want this, they want the poorest to suffer. Because they are evil, vile people.

  12. The reason people in this country hate benefits so much is because wages are so low and cost of living is so high, working people are told that people on benefits are getting more than them. It’s another way politics are trying to divert people from seeing the truth. Don’t moan about benefits, moan about your wages and the stagnate economy this government has created. If some one on benefits, who is in poverty is better off than someone in a full time job, the issue there isn’t the person on benefits.

  13. And with the price of energy set to go up this year (and with the rising cost of pretty much everything else), you can be damn sure it’s going to get a lot worse.

    The Tories don’t care.

  14. People know, it’s just that people who have the power to fix it don’t care. Actually the government is probably thrilled about the state it’s in.

  15. Shame the Labour Party did little to address this. For example, the current unemployment pay of £77pw is the equivalent of unemployment pay during the Labour years.

Elsewhere, it’s 80% of your former salary.

  16. The Tories constantly moan about the benefits cost ‘to ,”hard working” families.
The lions share of which is the old age pension. Why do the government need to subsidize families where both adults are working? Because employers pay the absolute minimum they can get away with. Then better off people help out by paying tax which is used for benefits.
The only winners are the tax avoiding shareholders and landlords who promptly ship their gains offshore and don’t invest in the UK.

  17. And as people down on their luck or dealt a bad hand drop through the holes in our social safety net, the Tories will **beam** with pride and glee as they hold up the shreds of that same net as ‘savings’, like a toddler holding up his first cut-out paper people chain.

  18. It’s a fundamental conservative belief that hard work is rewarded and opportunity is there for all who want to take it.

They believe that anything that discourages striving ahead is bad. Such as providing generous wellfare, let people sit just bow what they need so they have to go out to try and get more.

They believe people who don’t strive are lazy. And they believe that none of their hard earned money should go to people who are lazy.

Poor people are poor through choice and bad decisions.

And that sits at the heart of all their decisions.

The know the price of everything and the value of nothing. They have absolutely no concept of what people have to face everyday.

While I haven’t looked at the current batch of MPS 23 out of 29 of the coalitions cabinet that brought in austerity were millionaires.

  19. Don’t worry they spent £37 billion on the NHS test and trace app. Higher ups need their pockets filling forget the poor man.

  20. Let’s be honest, this isn’t an issue with welfare. It’s an issue with well paid jobs, an over priced housing market, and skyrocketing inflation.

Welfare should be a safety net for people.

If jobs were better paid, if you didn’t have to rely on two full time jobs for a shitty mortgage for a poxy little house, if whole industries and communities hadn’t been decimated between 70s and 90s, then people wouldn’t need the welfare state as much.

Imagine then, the possibilities if our taxes then went on investment and infrastructure rather than paying welfare because people can’t or won’t get jobs.

This is one of my issues with the left. The emphasis is on the state giving our taxes to people. But it would be far better if people had decent jobs, well paid, and with a better work life balance so parents weren’t forking out thousands each month on childcare so other people can bring up their kids.

  21. Unfit for purpose by design, how many years.. and more appallingly how many thousands of unnecessary deaths linked to government policy does it take?

  22. Fix taxation so those that are hoarding wealth pay.

Don’t raise my taxes when i’m unable yet to buy a house.

  23. But the public have repeatedly vote for the people that have created this UC system. So isn’t this what they voted for?

  24. It’s a genius system. Underfund a government department/service, wait for it to go to shit and be declared unfit for purpose, bring in a private company owned by your mates to consult on fixing it, thereby funneling millions of extra taxpayers £s into private pockets, rinse, and repeat.

Bonus points if the expensive consultants can get away with not actually even improving anything, meaning you get to start the cycle over all the sooner.

  25. Don’t say those words, or the Tories will use that as an excuse to get rid of it.

“Not fit for purpose? Alright then, no welfare for anyone ever!”

Though I wonder what gives the Tories a bigger stiffy, making the poor jump through hoops for scraps, or watching them starve to death?

  26. First world countries that are a fucking joke:
    1 – USA

    2 – UK

But we’re gunning for position one aren’t we?

  27. This government are failing the population in general apart from those “out of touch” at the top. Labour’s “Welfare State” one of the peoples most valuable assets is being robbed from us by the selfish, smirking scrounging charlatans, and we are letting them get away with it. Crime of the century.

  28. The welfare system is ableist and designed to inflict misery on the disabled. But no one seems to care about ableism.

  29. It doesn’t matter unfortunately. Every time the Tories get voted right back in. The Tories never have and never will care about those that aren’t well off.

It doesn’t help that so many people in the UK still see the less fortunate as some sort of threat. They don’t want them to afford even basic necessities. They think the only solution is “get a job”.

It’s a shame we as a society would rather see the many struggle just to prevent the few, that undoubtedly will abuse whatever gets put in place, from being able to “layabout” or spend money unnecessarily on “drugs and alcohol”. This sort of thinking isn’t just in the UK, it’s everywhere.

I always see comments like, “No, we can’t do that, people will just sit around and do nothing! I can’t have that!”. It is somewhat true. There will be people that would just do nothing or spend unnecessarily. However, not everyone will. The vast majority likely would put it to use and use it to improve their lives.

But no, just because there’s a few that would abuse any improved welfare system, it means we can’t have nice things. I find that to be ridiculous logic, but it doesn’t matter since too many people still think it.

I’ve lost all hope for a better future. People just don’t care enough these days.
