  1. Surely from hitting their head. Must’ve been unexpected. Awful.

  2. Unlocked a whole new level of fear about turbulence now

My condolences to the deceased and their family..

  3. I’m the one that used to stretch out and try to sleep. No seatbelt.

    Not any more.

    Which type of plane?

  4. Keep your seatbelt on 100% of the time while in flight. Using the bathroom aside obviously but turbulence injuries are literally 1:1 tied to seatbelts being unlatched.

  5. Apparently it dropped 6000 feet in 3 minutes. Is that normal?

  6. Likely heart or stroke issues? It would have to be some amazing level of turbo to cause head injuries that result in death.

  7. ALWAYS keep your seat belt fastened whenever you are seated. Don’t just clip it because the seat belt sign is on. Every sentence in the safety briefing video has a purpose.

  8. There are a lot of people up and about even when the seatbelt sign is turned on…I even saw people trying to head for the lavatory during turbulence.

  9. It sort of gives you confidence in the plane though, right?

If it can be that bad that you hit your head and die (presumably), but still the wings don’t fall off!

Also, it’s only going to get worse as we have more and more heat in the atmosphere.

  10. When I was flying back from Japan last year, we did turbulence right as I had sat on the toilet. I had no time to return to my seat, so decided to ride it out.

Scary to think that I could have done an Elvis, with no best-selling songs to show for it.

  11. While this is horrible and my condolences go out to the family, it’s a reminder that it’s so important to keep your seatbelt fastened at all times and not walk around the airplane unless absolutely necessary.

  12. Thats why….always fucking wear your seatbelts in the plane if its possible, my condolences to the deceased and their family 😞

  13. Ok here’s some facts from a 777 pilot.

Clear air turbulence is very rare in this area.

This crew would have most likely flown into a thunderstorm. Very bad.

We have to constantly monitor our weather radar to avoid convective weather. We usually get at least a 10 minute heads up to manoeuvre as required and put the seat belt signs on.

Lots of airline especially in the USA use the seat belt signs as a law suite mitigator rather than what it’s actually for. So passengers often disregard the signs because of this culture. Other airlines use it appropriately when the conditions would be unsafe for the cabin crew to walk around and do their service.

  14. If you are in your seat and the plane is moving, wear your seatbelt. Ish happens in the blink of an eye.
