Vladimir Putin replaces Russia’s security chiefs in surprise reshuffle • FRANCE 24 English

we can now bring in our International Affairs editor Angela diffley Angela uh good afternoon good to see you why was somebody who was so close to Vladimir Putin replaced yes it was well known that they were very close they even holidayed uh together uh Sergey Shu had been defense minister since 2012 uh and so for many this has come as something as a surprise should be noted that it looks like efforts have been made not to humiliate him he’s been moved to the security Council and will be a ky advisor to Putin we’ll see later on whether that uh uh amounts to much behind this are two issues really uh there is growing disqui about what appears to be a culture of corruption uh within the defense Ministry uh just last month uh Sero shu’s number two uh teor ianov was charged with corruption and there was growing uh comment about a culture uh of corruption uh and also since the beginning of this war really the Hawks uh those who have really backed uh Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have been extremely critical of shyu he is not a military man and they have made clear loud and clear that uh what’s going on in the battlefield it should have all been much easier an estimated 350 or so soldiers might have been lost on the battlefield and he’s been very much held to account uh for a for going ahead with this war in a way that is not the best way so he’s not a military man but nor is his replacement no and uh this replacement is very much being uh painted by mosow as a bid to curb spending uh within the defense Ministry uh the man who has been chosen is a an economist uh and is is not a military man either himself and he is expected to curb corruption also he has a reputation for honesty he has no real power base so won’t be a threat to Putin either and the idea is that it appears the Russians are concerned that this war will be very longlasting and that they need to be clear that they can both manufacture and uh buy enough weapons to win this thing and so it’s very much about putting uh the defense sector a priority within the economy and that will be his job and that’s what this is all about we’re being told by by Kremlin so let’s talk about all these changes are happening at the top of moscow’s Defense ministry as Russia is making gains on the battlefield in Ukraine yeah particularly in the KH region which is on the border with Russia uh there are a number of small units infiltrating and causing considerable able damage lots of people have left harke City that said most military analysts see they reckon that the way this is being pursued suggests that there’s no real attempt to try to capture har that would be too difficult and too difficult to hold on to the idea it appears uh from Russia is to lure soldiers away from the East the Eastern Frontline and make them busy with trying to defend that area uh in the Northeast around har the Russian are increasingly Keen to make progress before that us Aid military aid which was finally voted reaches the Frontline before the new higher number of soldiers after a recruiting campaign in Ukraine takes place they are Keen to make as much progress as they can before any of that happens and hence this big uh offensive in harke and the ukrainians struggling at the moment you’ll say how things SP out thank you very much for that Angela

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday replaced Sergei Shoigu as defense minister in a Cabinet shakeup that comes as he begins his fifth term in office. In line with Russian law, the entire Russian Cabinet resigned Tuesday following Putin’s glittering inauguration in the Kremlin, and most members have been widely expected to keep their jobs, while Shoigu’s fate had appeared uncertain. Angela Diffley, international affairs editor at France 24, analyses Putin’s strategy here.

  1. It's amazing how distorted your realities are when you are biased. I have another opinion as to why this change occurred and its based on information from independent and unbiased sources. Given the inevitable colapse of Ukraine Putin needs a person with both political an economic experiences to handle the aftermath, and that's the most possible explanation everything else is guessing

  2. It's a surprise to the West , but not a surprise us .He has done very good job as Defense Minister against 50 +:Countries in Ukraine 🇺🇦. He is still in the defense structure position, 12 years he needs a break.

  3. Westerners…..always think they know it all. Try as hard as you can but you can never understand president Putin and that has and will always be your doom. All your predictions about this war have turned out to be at best propaganda.

  4. Shoigu was about to retire before SMO, but Putin asked him say on. Shoigu is the master of logistics ,his competency is why Russia has defeated the resources of 50 countries against it. War is over, no need for Shoigu anymore, someone else can pick his duties up.

  5. Usual western media propaganda by people who have never travelled to Russia
They stay in the comfort of their offices and make assumptions as experts

  6. Russians are thoroughly confused by this move on Putins part and will come here for facts about what's really going on

  7. 1- The war cost has damaged the economy in a big way, so an economist needs to supervise the army .2- The army's budget for 2024 is 3 times more than the budget of education, health and enviornment combined, and this needs to be cut . 3- The sanctions have taken their toll on the country, but no one can solve this problem unless Russia withdraws from Ukraine and pay massive compensation fees.

  8. Putin's brilliant War time Economist Andrei Belousov the man who defeated Western economic and financial sanctions is the new minister of defence ! His job is to economically integrate the Russian civilian industry with the Russian military industry complex! In Growing a massive military industrial output to the level of the former Soviet Union military manufacturing capacity !
