The [French president](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/emmanuel-macron/) “will go there tonight”, according to a spokesman, adding that a “return to calm is starting to arrive” in the Pacific territory.
More than 3,000 people are estimated to have been stranded by a week of unrest that has shuttered the Pacific archipelago’s main international airport.
Why are they holding a poorly edited Azerbaijani flag?
Oh the french are violently protesting against laws they think are unfair… oh wait they’re indigenous people on the other side of the world? Welp let’s send in the military. /S
3 referendums tilted in favour of independence that all lost. There is no good reason to protest here.

“We don’t want your immigrants changing our culture and taking over our country.”
“Also, we want our emigrants to impose our culture and take over your country.”

This picture is so tough.
Free Caledonia!
Why does France even want a territory so far away? They rely on other nations to service it? Seems ridiculous.
Independence was desired by ca. 40% of people. After riots it is probably way less.
Job for french foreign legion
So, who is Macron in the picture?
Reférundum should have happened in the 60s when the rest of the old french empire voted for independance. The ethnic demography was way different back then. Half a century later, kanaks are outnumbered.
The green scarf does him no favours
New Caledonia was basically a protectorate with benefits up to the law that ensued the riots: different taxes, different electoral system, and as close as you could get to a nationality system without being an official nation.
They had more and more votes in favour of independence up to the last referendum which was boycotted by the natives, probably why it struck the population as censorship (and possibly a bit of colonialism) when the government suddenly started the procedures to incorporate a law that would allow for all citizens of France to vote, not just the ones that don’t live 16000km away. It’s undeniable that it was a dumb move from the govt to affect their people’s sovereignty all-the-while the two most mediatised wars in the world are about national sovereignty.
Compare the last referendum that happened in New Caledonia with the referendum that happened in Donetsk & Luhansk. 1. Both resulted in a 80% vote for a pre-mediated result. 2. Both were executed under duress (COVID vs Russian occupation). 3. Both undergoing demographic change ‘lawfully’.
But one is bad, one is good. Not picking sides either ways, I’m just a neutral with popcorn.
France the Hypocrite imperial state, wants independence for Quebec BUT NOT for Corsica or any of its overseas Departments etc…
The kanaks are much interested with his democratic values😂🤣👌👌👍

***The Telegraph reports:***
Emmanuel Macron will fly to New Caledonia in an attempt to end the [violent insurrection](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/14/new-caledonia-riots-french-pacific-island/) that has left six people dead and thousands of tourists stranded.

Mr Macron’s visit comes as an Australian Air Force transport aircraft evacuated trapped tourists from a small domestic airport in [New Caledonia’s](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/new-caledonia/) capital Noumea, as separatist roadblocks continued to hinder [access to the main international airport](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/19/french-forces-recapture-new-caledonia-airport-road-rioters/) – which is closed to commercial flights until at least Saturday.
