New holiday lets rules may ‘worsen’ housing crisis, says London Councils

  1. So if I understand it right, the new rule coming in would automatically reclassify any current short lets (not sure how that’s identified, just anything already on airbnb or the like?) as a registered short let. And councils are asking for landlords to properly register and pay for that registration rather than it being free and automatic.

Seems like a sensible ask from the councils. Landlords have to pay for an HMO licence, but they could turn their flats into airbnbs for free. And with the lack of any real enforcement of the 90-day rule, you just advertise the same place on multiple platforms and you’re good for the year.

Though with so many landlords in government, they’ll probably just push it through regardless.
