DUP MP Ian Paisley has accused the Irish government of “electioneering” over the decision to formally recognise the state of Palestine, as he branded the announcement “atrocious”.

On Wednesday morning, Taoiseach Simon Harris said that Ireland was recognising Palestine because: “We believe in freedom and justice as fundamental principles of international law”.

“We said the point of recognising the state of Palestine was coming closer, that point has now arrived,” he said at Government Buildings in Dublin.

“Today, Ireland, Norway and Spain are announcing that we recognise the state of Palestine.

“Each of us will now undertake whatever national steps are necessary to give effect to that decision.”

In response to the move, Israel have recalled their ambassador to Ireland Dana Erlich in what they billed as a “strong message to Ireland”.

Paisley, the DUP’s North Antrim MP, suggested the move will “play into the hands of extremist, anti-Jewish and anti-Israel factions”.

“Ireland should brace itself for a run of abuse against people and businesses associated with Israel,” he said.

"What is atrocious is that the announcement this morning did not have one word of condemnation of Hamas terrorism on 7 October.”

Paisley accused Harris of using the conflict to further his electoral campaign.

“It has taken the Irish state over 90 years to recognise Palestine. One can only view that this is about electioneering and appealing to the extreme elements in Irish society to come back and support the so-called centrist parties"

Meanwhile, SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood welcomed the Irish government's formal recognition of Palestine.

He urged the Foreign Secretary David Cameron to endorse the recognition of the state of Palestine as a necessary step toward a two-state solution.

Eastwood said: “I welcome and strongly endorse the decision of the Irish government to recognise the state of Palestine today. Following an important vote by the United Nations General Assembly earlier in the month, this generates further momentum toward recognition of Palestine and a durable two-state solution to conflict in the region.”

The SDLP claimed recognising Palestine as a state can resolve conflict within the region.

"A sustainable peace must begin with recognition of the legitimate aspirations and rights of both peoples in the eyes of the international community,” he added.

“A peace process, as far off as that may feel right now, will only succeed if the people of Israel and Palestine are equal partners. Today's decision is an honest reflection of that unavoidable truth.

"I sincerely hope that this act of recognition will be followed in other capitals in the time ahead.”

  1. Never shy of falling on the wrong side of history.

  2. He takes issue with Ireland legally recognising a state that the British themselves created, hence the original land being called *Mandatory* Palestine, which the Brits then had a hand in chopping up to create modern Palestine?

How do these people get to work in the morning without injuring themselves?

  3. I usually shy away from posts like this but I think I decided to jump it here since this article seems to be the most detailed

  4. >”What is atrocious is that the announcement this morning did not have one word of condemnation of Hamas terrorism on 7 October.”

    YAWWWWNNNNN

  5. in what way is it electioneering when all the major parties in the South hold the same view and the leaders of two of those parties where stood beside him during the announcement?

  6. Somewhat unsurprising DUPaisley thinks the concept of national self-determination is threatening.

  7. At least he is consistent cos he’s still outraged that Ireland got recognised as a state about 100 years ago.

  8. Can we please replace this guy? Who thinks it’s a good idea to let someone with judgement this poor be in charge of anything? He took bribes in the form of holidays, he swindled his expenses, his wife cuckholded him with a teenager and his long term buddy turned out to be a rapist pedophile.

  9. WHHHAAAATTTTTTTTT? oh sorry, you said Ian Paisley, yeah ok, that makes sense.

  10. Ian. Go get fucked. The republic along with Spain and Norway are all sovereign states and I for one back this move from them

  11. israeli and palestinian fleg sales are going through the roof this July. Anyone want to jump in and start a fleg manufacturing business?

  12. If Paisley is against it, you know you are on safe moral ground.

  13. What is up with the widespread callous ‘fuck em’ attitude towards Palestine? Even if Hamas detonated a thermonuclear warhead in Jerusalem it still doesn’t justify the extermination of Palestinian women and children. 🤦🏻‍♂️
Imagine if the UK government had retaliated to every IRA bombing with missile strikes and carpet bombing in Ireland. Where the fuck is peoples humanity?

  14. Harris says “We believe in freedom and justice”.
Tell that to the people kidnapped and raped by hamas.

  15. How do you know you’ve done a good thing? A Paisley says it’s bad.

  16. It is honestly time for the DUP to shut the fuck up.

    Sick of their shite.

  17. Catholics, even non-religious people raised in catholic countries, are about twice as antisemitic as protestants. That’s according to the ADL Global 100 Index. The catholic and orthodox church was the source of most antisemitism throughout European history. Ireland is also the most antisemitic country in northern Europe according to the same study.

  18. Does our Ian have any opinion about Spain and Norway also recognising Palestine? What about the myriad of other countries that already did?

  19. My partner once accidentally hit him with her backpack, wish she had hit him harder

  20. Ian the type of man to complain the crust is still on his bread

  21. Maybe if Palestine gifted him a few all expenses paid luxury holidays he’d change his tune

  22. More idiocy from the Irish state.

How quickly they’ve forgotten that the Palestinians have consistently rejected the idea of a two state solution.

  23. “DUP’s..”

That’s enough reading of that article, thanks.

  24. “Mr Paisley is quoted as saying from his holiday in Mauritius”

  25. You know what’s atrocious an MP like Paisley who have his wife a massive fucking £20k payrise a few years ago for a part time admin position, giving her a salary of £30k-£35k.

Or an MP like Paisley who went on an all expenses paid trip to Sri Lanka and not declaring it.

Or that despite a recall petition his constituents were not that bothered to vote him out.

Or that as an MP he and his father before him have seen an erosion of big employers in his constituency so that Ballymena a once thriving town has turned into a lot of other high streets – desolate.

  26. Why does anyone give any attention to the son of a hate preacher?
