Richie sunak just called a general election so why has it been called now what happens next and why does the pm get to decide anyway sunak could have called the election any time up to the 17th of December because that date will be 5 years after Parliament first met after the last general election everyone was expecting an awesome vote to give the Tories time for people to feel the impact of recent tax cuts but today inflation’s down to its lowest rate in almost 3 years so why is it down to the PM to decide anyway well it hasn’t always been that way in 2011 the House of Commons had that power but after winning in 2019 the Tories gave that role back to the Prime Minister and now he’s called it what happens next sunak has asked King Charles to dissolve parliament triggering a six- week preparation period and taking us on to polling day on the 4th of July
