    The Defence Secretary said that the two countries were “collaborating” on lethal aid for Moscow to deploy in its [war against Kyiv](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/19/ukraine-missile-crimea-destroys-black-sea-fleet-ship/).

    He told a defence conference in London on Wednesday: “An axis of authoritarian states led by Russia, China, [Iran](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/21/iranians-line-streets-to-mourn-president-ebrahim-raisi/) and [North Korea](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/21/kim-jong-un-nuclear-weapons-moon-jai-in-memoir/) have escalated and fuelled conflicts and tensions.

    “They have increasingly been working together,” he said.

    “And today I can reveal that we have evidence that Russia and China are collaborating on combat equipment for use in Ukraine.”

    He said that the surge in trade between the two nations since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, and [Vladimir Putin’s recent state visit to Beijing](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/05/19/russia-china-ties-direct-threat-to-democracy-says-shapps/) showed that the countries were “covering each other’s back”.

  4. The West needs to help Ukraine drive Russia out, and to make them pay for reconstruction.

    Russia needs to be made to deeply regret their decisions, otherwise I don’t see this path ending well for any of us.

    China must be made to understand that they chose poorly.

  5. China has been doing this. They seem to think it’s in their interest to do so. Their escalation in this regard may infer more to come in the south pacific…

    Ukraine is a sovereign nation. They can have on their soil any person, troops, munitions, etc. from any other country that they choose, regardless of affiliation. If nato countries want to shoot down any missiles over ukraine air space, they are legally allowed, if Ukraine permits it. More so if Ukraine requests it.

  12. This is the big cash out of a decades long investment by Russia and China

    For almost 40 years characters like Lavrov and such created the narrative of the bully west built on Cold War scars – making it hip and a champion of counter culture views to be against the status quo

    And so the world view want of open-mindedness and self determination became bad – its now hip to be regressive and pro-imperialst because “it’s hip to be against the status quo” 

  13. What we need is the powerful (politicians and billionaires) to accept that the lesser of two evils (short term dent in profits/long term global stability) is sanctions on China. China has its own problems so it likely won’t take much to put them off.

  22. We’re honestly in worse shape for conflict than the Cold War. During the Cold War China was closer to the west than the USSR. Now the second world if it exists adds the world’s second biggest economy and the third one is neutral but in support of Russia. The African world used to have South Africa in the western sphere of influence and now Africa is nearly completely on Russia’s side.

  24. Can we just not try to get China involved in a war? It benefits no one. Even the US knows this. Yes, China is doing shady things, but they have not crossed a red line.

  26. Foolish move imo, eventually Russia will provoke the west into a real war, and no one will escape the next world war.
