On this day, the 29th of January 1989. Hungary becomes the first nation of the eastern bloc to establish diplomatic relations with South Korea.

  1. A weirdly transitional time in Hungarian politics, in that Kadar had been forcibly retired, and the opposition were semi-openly organising, but there was no immediate prospect of democratic elections.

  2. It’s interesting how democratisation of Eastern block has parallels with democratisation of South Korea
