I have family, that was supposed to be on this ship. My great grandmother told us her lifestory some years ago and the escape form the russian Army was part of it.
Anyway she and her children tried to get on the Gustloff but there was no space left. They eventually managed to get on another ship. Since the ships left at roughly the same time they were near each other. The crew of her ship, from her telling, spotted the sinking Gustloff but had to go on because of the U-Boat threatand could not save anyone.
This is what, in my opinion, makes this disaster even more tragic.
