  1. Is that such a bad question when having a conversation about pubs?

I presume some Welsh pubs will still be showing the tournament and some Welsh people will still be interested whether that’s through cheering on one of the other home nations or just enjoying the internationals.

  2. Yeh but plenty of English people live there. Probably. He was just going for a very niche vote.

  3. Maybe he thinks that many Welsh football fans will be watching the Euros in pubs even though Wales aren’t involved. He’s probably right too.

  4. Anyone remember Cameron (Eton) trying to be a man of the people by saying that he was an Aston Villa fan, a few years after he said he was a West Ham fan.

Sunack (Winchester College) is doing his man of the people act.

  5. yes – many welsh people watch england matches and cheer for whoever is playing against them

  6. Fair play OP, your username is exactly what I think when Rish turns up anywhere.

  7. Rishi: “Did you see that ludicrous display last night?”

  8. In fairness, Euro 2008 was one of the more enjoyable tournaments I’ve watched.

  9. I see the talk went well, the participants all look like they’ve been held against their will for about 10 hours straight

  10. This isn’t an issue at all. Once Wales are out it’s very common for Welsh people to support England.

And honestly most footballs fans I know are usually just happy that there is going to be some football on free to watch TV so they don’t have to pay £50 a month for Sky.

  11. Hahahaha, I didn’t think he could do anything to half impress me but that’s quality, what a shithouse

  12. A man of the people. We just don’t know which people.

  13. This is the kind of shit that really worries me, and we’re literally a day in.

It’s basically “the Backfire Effect” and cost Labour the last two elections. You make a bizarre and reaching claim about the Tories, which causes the average voter to think “hmm, that’s not too bad, why are they on the attack? I’m just going to vote for them.”

The vast majority of voters are easily-swayed middle ground, so this type of media psychology works too damn easily.

u/SirLoinThatSaysNi is right – this is a perfectly reasonable thing to ask. Lots of people in Wales still love the football. I’m sure a damn fair majority will be watching and laughing when England lose (sorry fellow Englanders, but it’s going to happen at some point before the final).

This utter desperation to make Sunak look out of touch when he already is, and to make the Tories look bad when they already are, is just diverting away form their real and actual failings.

A blithe comment about football is just the start, we’ve still got all the over-reaching backfire-triggering stuff like “TORIES SET TO MURDER 500 PEOPLE A WEEK IF THEY WIN!” This kind of ridiculous over-simplified reactionary nonsense diverts attention from the fact that benefits cuts and the total shambles of public services, perhaps most importantly including the NHS and social care, DOES lead to premature and unnecessary deaths.

  14. Billionaire out of touch with reality? Well I’ll be damned

  15. I read the headline and thought “why won’t they have the £?”
