I actually remember quite enjoying it except when we had to do it in the pouring rain which would never be allowed now.

  1. Maypole dancing is one of my favourite primary school memories 😔

  2. Does he cheer up once you get the policeman into the wickerman?

  3. I never did the maypole thing at primary school, nor did I even know what it was until I heard a streamer mention it a few weeks ago. Is it more of a region-specific thing?

  4. Tell him that life could be definitely worse. It could have been Morris dancing!!!

  5. I’m curious, are you in a rural area? When I was a kid in the 80s, I never heard of anyone doing this. I’m dimly aware people still do it, but I wasn’t sure where.

  6. Maypole was a fond memory of mine. I went to primary school in the 90s. In a town so not too rural.

The Wickerman film ruined that innocent wholesome childhood memory. 😭

  7. Can confirm your son is correct. At least D day didn’t make you feel like a massive wet flannel.

  8. Perhaps take him to Normandy this June for the 80th anniversary of D Day, see if you can change his mind.

  9. In the 60s in the city in Leicester in our infant school it was a thing. It was settled in a dusty corner of the music room behind the stacks of chairs. We got it out once a year.
