Kinda also important note for a long timr Kings and nobles spoke French, or Latin was a major written language.
The Maps of Ireland are misleading. English did not take hold In Ireland until at least the 17th Century, even then it was only spoken by a small Planter minority. Prior to this only a couple of very small pockets of English speakers existed in Ireland, since they were mostly illiterate they didn’t leave much evidence. The Norman settlers & their descendants who arrived from Britain in the 12th & 13th centuries spoke a french dialect, when they were not speaking Irish. Irish remained the language spoken by the majority up until 1850’s.
This defragmentation process is natural and unavoidable but that’s so sad to see languages disappear. Especially for Gaelics
I believe Welsh language has started to increase in prevalence again now
I think this simplifies the evolution and spread of English quite a lot. “English” before the Viking landings would have been much different.
Also worth noting other languages at play not presented here. For a decent period (a couple of centuries), Scotland had areas of a predominantly French speaking population.
