New intersection in Aalsmeer (Netherlands)

  1. I love how the Dutch fix everything with a roundabout. Their infrastructure is a joy. Compared to ours at least 😅.

  2. So the busses go straight through and cars on the roundabout have to yield. Which is highly unusual and will cause a lot of accidents.
The designer of this monstrosity should be in jail.

  3. Kind of surprised they didn’t go for a turbo roundabout here, since that’s what all the others along this line are.

And yes, while not visible in the picture, the bus lane has additional traffic lights to make sure they don’t cross each other. The shark teeth are there in case the light isn’t operational and making priority more clear.

This exclusive bus lane goes all the way from Schiphol btw, which may be the longest in the Netherlands right now?

  4. I’m Dutch myself, but kinda confused how this is supposed to be quicker than a normal roundabout.

The busses have to yield to ALL other traffic on the roundabout. It looks like busses will just never be able to cross if it’s a busy day.

  5. I always found it interesting how the Netherlands has relatively small sidewalks compared to their bike lanes. I’m not complaining though

  6. Fuck, two lane cycle lane on a roundabout. Perpare for some injuries on that stretch. People on fast bikes coming from two sides is very hard to keep safe. Even with experience and care it can cause accidents.

  7. Where is this exactly? I’d like to go out and film it to see how it’s working.

I love how Dutch infrastructure looks when it’s fresh. The colours are so bold.

  8. Oh! Oh! I cross this intersection a few times a week. On my bicycle.

There are a few of these roundabouts after one another, I think like 3 or so?

It’s a FUCKING **SHITSHOW**. And I don’t mean the design of it, the design is great. It’s the goddamn people. I don’t know why the fuck people turn into maniacs when they approach this particular roundabout, but they do.

Those little shark teeth and the red paint on the road signal that cars need to let cyclers go first. Cars need to stop.
But they don’t. I’ve been close to getting hit a few times now, because cars just dgaf about letting cyclers through on THIS particular roundabout. A few of my friends have been close to getting hit as well, and a few of them have actually been hit (no major injury, but still).

I really don’t fucking get why this happens so often. I’ve never had a problem with other roundabouts, I’ve never felt unsafe cyclying in the Netherlands. But Aalsmeerders turn into lunatics when they get to this particular roundabout.

  9. It really troubles me that this picture demonstrates that well design traffic concepts exists and somehow my home city (Linz AT) just sucks … and want the people believe that cars are the most important way of transportation and there is no alternative to them …

  10. I like the space between the cycle lane and car lane. When there isn’t enough space between the car lane and cycle lane, there is the possibility for cyclists to hide in a cars blindspot when the car exists the roundabout.

With this solution, the car driver is nearly perpendicular to the cycle path when crossing it during an exit. Great for visibility.
