50 years ago today, the Bloody Sunday massacre occurred in the Bogside area of Derry, Northern Ireland, where British soldiers shot 26 unarmed civilians and killed 14, some of them as young as 17 years old, who were peacefully protesting discrimination against Catholics in housing and employment.

  1. A truly shameful incident in the history of the British military.

If anyone would like to read a book on it Douglas Murray (yes that Douglas Murray) wrote a harrowing account of both the event and the Saville Inquiry itself in *Bloody Sunday*, it’s very much worth the effort even if I had to stop numerous times because it was so upsetting.

  2. Media coverage did suprised the Paras.

They were expecting some pleasant shooting at the locals as practiced in the colonies, but then cameras ruined the fun.
