Queen Camilla Reveals Her Favourite Children’s Writer at Charleston Festival

didn’t um good morning everybody um I’m sorry about the weather I lived in saus for many years and it was always sunny so I don’t know what’s happened today but anyway um it’s very very nice to be here again and as the pride patron of Charleston I’m delighted to welcome you all to this year’s litery Festival in a place rightly described by a pre previous resident as an Earthly Paradise I was asked before I came to think of an author whose books I loved uh when I was the same age as some of you children it’s always hard to choose one favorite writer because there so many out there but I’ve selected a Victorian novelist who died exactly a 100 years ago I hasten to add that whatever you may suspect I’m not actually Victoria myself now Francis hudon Bernett was someone like all of us who understood the incredible thrill of reading she wrote The Secret Garden and the little princess amongst many others now I think it’s time for us to experience a bit of magic for ourselves so without further Ado let me declare today’s Festival open and let me leave you with a final word from Francis everything’s a story you are a story I am a story thank you your I only fictional places for a book that you’d like to travel to and why one place I I think I’d love to go to is Hots I think I’d like to jump on the express and I’d like to go to Hogwarts and sit in that wonderful Hall and wait for the hat to come around and and pick a house [Music] [Music]

The Queen has opened this year’s Charleston Festival – to celebrate the power of books and reading for children and young people.

Appearing alongside Children’s Laureate Joseph Coelho and local primary school children, Her Majesty named Victorian novelist Frances Hodgson Burnett as one of her favourite writers – before joking that she herself, is not Victorian. Report by Matthew Covell.

  1. Lovely to see Queen Camilla at this festival.
She is an avid reader and encourages children too.
Charleston is a wonderful house to visit.
Too rainy for the gardens today❤️🇬🇧

  2. Да никакая она не королева. Елизавета никогда бы не махнула так шарфом. Нет у них сейчас королевских манер, воспитания.

  3. Lovely visit. 📖💖
Reading supports you all through your life; for gaining knowlege and entertainment, and for keeping your mind sharp.
I'm happy to see Queen Camilla patron of so many literacy programs.
    God Bless the Queen, and
    God Save the King!

  4. Say what you want about her past- but she has put in the WORK and HUSTLE with the royal family. She really does have the grace and wisdom in her current role. She is no nonsense and really knows her lane

  5. Isn't she lovely! Wow, so without poshness even though she's well off. Can definately see why Charles as a man chased her and reuinited later. She would be quite an asset in the Royal Family and while Catherine is on leave, a great addition to Catherine's Early Years work, alongside perhaps Princess Anne or Beatrice? Spread the load a bit.

  7. To this day I love The Secret Garden – but at 77 years old my most favourite book from childhood is Heidi by Johanna Spyri and I reread it about every 3 years or so; and still cry when Heidi leaves her grandfather!!! There are so many books I read as a child that helped me escape into a world of fantasy and wonder!!

Saudades!❤🙏🇧🇷

  9. Oh I absolutely LOVED "The Secret Garden", and "The Little Princess", particularly the latter, though I didn't (dear me) recognise the Authoress's name. I still have a very battered, tatty copy of "The Little Princess", and am going to haul it off the shelf and reread it now. For old time's sake. At age 61. It'll do me good! The Queen is a lovely person, so real.
