SZ: The right-wing summit in Madrid stood up to Putin

  1. The meeting of the right-wing parties in Madrid was conceived as a campaign against the EU. The tense situation in the world meant that the final declaration – in line with the position of Poland – made Russia surprisingly clearly criticized.

Russia was unexpectedly condemned by the participants of the right-wing conference

“The meeting was supposed to be a great campaign for the European Union,” writes Karin Janker in a correspondence from Madrid, published on Sunday (30/01/2022) in the online edition of “Sueddeutsche Zeitung”. After all, Brussels is, in the unanimous opinion of the participants of the meeting in Madrid, “a bureaucratic machine that has become independent of nations and pursues ideological goals.”

Criticism of Russia instead of a campaign against the EU

“The global situation meant that another, possibly more pressing, threat to Europe was also discussed in Madrid. At the end of the meeting, a statement was issued with a surprisingly clear message towards Russia, although Russian President Vladimir Putin was not named after him, “the SZ reads.

The document condemned “Russia’s military actions near the eastern borders of Europe, which led to the brink of war.” It is also about “threats from external aggression”. As Janker points out, the text of the statement is largely consistent with the Polish position.

“SZ” recalls an interview given by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki to the Spanish newspaper “El Mundo”, in which a Polish politician warned against Putin’s “imperial fantasies” and criticized Germany’s position in the Ukrainian conflict. Morawiecki again warned against dependence on Russian gas in connection with Nord Stream 2. He also announced that he would persuade Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to resolve the dispute with Ukraine. This remark was made a few days before Orban’s planned visit to Putin.

    Orban and Putin

According to the German journalist, it is difficult to expect Orban to represent the position stated in the statement during the meeting with Putin. As she emphasized, Orban did not even appear at the press conference closing the meeting.

According to “SZ”, the leader of the National Union, Marie Le Pen, did not sign the part of the joint statement that concerned Russia.

Each participant of the “Madrid Summit” – as the host, the Spanish Vox party, called the meeting – pursued its agenda. Vox politician Jorge Buxadé, describing the meeting as an “undisputed success” at the end of the meeting, stood alone, concludes Karin Janker.

The summit of European conservative and right-wing parties in Madrid was held on Saturday under the slogan “Defend Europe”. The meeting was hosted by the leader of the Vox party, Santiago Abascal.
