German state Hessen will introduce Ukrainian as a second foreign language at schools in the upcoming school year. One of the aims is to preserve Ukrainian identity and culture.

  1. Learning a language is always a good thing, and being able to read (and hopefully understand) Shevchenko is always a good thing. I am not there yet myself, but i have been to poetry readings, and even translated his literature is still powerful.

  2. I’m German, and if I had the chance to learn Ukrainian back when I was in school, I would have taken it. East Slavic languages are really cool, and Ukrainian is without a doubt the most fascinating one among them because of the crazy dialect continuum.

    Good to see that Hesse is being proactive about cultural preservation.
