Putin open to Ukraine ceasefire with conditions: Reuters report

[Music] [Applause] there was no confirmation but also no denial Vladimir Putin visiting one of his few allies Friday Belarus said there is a need for peace talks with Ukraine but he added that they should reflect realities on the ground what that likely refers to are the front lines in eastern Ukraine according to a reuter’s report four sources close to Putin say he is willing toot frees the war that would be on the condition he keeps what his troops have taken right now Russia controls about 18% of Ukrainian territory it is fighting to take more now the first question about this potential Putin proposal is whether it’s real well a report citing multiple Kremlin sources even anonymously isn’t likely to have come out of the Kremlin without Putin’s approval the University of Toronto’s oral braa it’s highly unlikely this is a push’s regime it is very tightly controlled the other question is motivation The Proposal could be a trial balloon to feel things out it could also be a way of putting pressure on Ukraine and the West to play on growing fatigue with the war but an agreement at this point would leave Russia isolated and impoverished and Putin with perhaps only one accomplishment if Vladimir Putin is focus only on one thing that is staying in power and protecting absolute power then he has been successful the Ukrainian president in his weekly statement Friday said Putin is trying to disrupt an upcoming peace Summit any way he can about 70 countries are set to meet next month in Switzerland that will include prime minister trudo China has been invited Russia has not Mike Armstrong Global News Montreal oh

Four anonymous sources apparently close to Russian President Vladimir Putin say he is willing to end his war if Russia is allowed to keep the territories it now controls in Ukraine.

The big question is whether the messages are real.

Mike Armstrong reports.

  1. Let's be real here… this is the same guy that told the world just days before Russia invaded Ukraine, that they had no intention of doing so. The same guy who promised a shipping channel for Ukraine to ship out grain, and then reneged – multiple times. This guy simply cannot be trusted. And let's be honest, this "war" has cost Russia about $1.5 Trillion dollars in seized assets, and destroyed/damaged military, infrastructure, and refinery equipment, with that number growing with each passing day. The mighty Black Sea fleet has been decimated… and a safe bet Ukraine isn't finished sinking ships yet. The Russian air force has lost a huge number of jets and helicopters. The domestic airline industry is struggling to keep planes in the air. And Russia's vast arsenal of tanks, armoured fighting vehicles, and artillery has been significantly reduced in size. It is only a matter of time before Ukraine will take out more of Russia's refineries and storage facilities, and the Kerch Bridge remains a target that is going to get hit and hit hard in the coming weeks or months. Russia needs peace as much as Ukraine does, but don't expect Ukraine to agree to any deal that will allow Russia to keep sovereign Ukraine land, because it isn't going to happen.

  2. This is about as creditable of a solution as electric vehicles are for 'climate change', if there was a ceasefire right now, who would benefit the most? Think about this crap before you say it Global/Reuters.

  3. After billions wasted on this stupid war and hundreds of thousands dead, time for negotiations… unless the USA wants to prolong the war so they can sell more weapons to Europe and Trudie

  4. "Russia will be isolated." LOL! 90% of the world population sides with Russia and China. Russia is crying all the way to the bank. Thanks for your amazing "analysis," Global.

  5. some of the nato nations with a backbone have said they aren't averse to sending troops into ukraine. now we know just how afraid putin is of nato. this proposal is nothing short of a white flag. he's trying to surrender without giving up his ill gotten gains.

  6. This war is not winnable. Even if Russia was able to occupy all of Ukraine there’s no way they could stop the constant drone attacks. It just would end up with thousands of Russian deaths per month for decades. Is that the objective now? And the drones are just going to get more and more sophisticated.
