Germany just suggested bringing back mandatory service like two weeks ago, now this… they must be anticipating future need for trained bodies.

In other news, a group of middle aged people that never did national service, and are now too old to qualify for it themselves, think it would be a jolly good idea if lots of young people had to do national service.

If there is 2.5 Billion spare, can’t this be used to improve pay in the armed forces, drive up recruitment and include higher education to at least foundation degree or equivalent trade skill for those who join. Armed forces should only include those that want to be there, otherwise they are a liability. Oh and provide more places for doctors and nurses at university, those should never have been cut, cause that is the actual army we need.

In the US I would be down for this if they gave us free college and or healthcare after. Also increase service credits and funding for the Army Corps of Engineers, or Americorps.

why not put that $2.5b into upping the wages for people in the armed forces, or offer free collage/uni after after 2-4 years time in the army etc.
make it so they can gain a trade while earning a good wage, so many other things they could do.

The thing is, I’d actually like to see a return of the Civilian Conservation Corp (in the US), or something like it. Let people get outside. Give them some public service work in the late highschool or early college years. Pay them for their time. There’s lots of public works projects, clean up, beautification, and other things they could do that would be productive for the country but aren’t profitable enough to interest profit motive guided companies.
But these dumb dumbs just want to make everyone be in the military and George Carlin is rolling in his grave laughing that he was right.
