Leaked National Service plans don’t rule out arresting teens for not taking part

1. I feel like the tories know they are gonna be defeated, so are making these ridiculous policies up to try and either sabotage themselves, or are some kind of last ditch attempt to get the votes of a certain group (much like scrapping HS2 East/North in favour of other transport projects, mainly roads)

2. And if the vast majority choose the volunteering, what then?

3. Good luck on that. There’s not going to be enough court capacity/ jail space for them saying no.

4. Why would they introduce this policy, seriously. Do they really expect anyone younger than 50 would think it’s a good idea?!

   It also doesn’t rule out putting people in stocks and throwing veg at them. Or putting them into a trebuchet and firing them into the sea. Or getting them to dress up as pantomime horses and doing a little dance.

6. I’ve got a 15 going on 16 nephews and I’ll tell you this for free. That cunt should not be allowed anywhere near firearms let along and heavy machinery.

   This is absolutely 100% an idea constructed to get the 60+ year olds who moan about “the youth of today” back on board.

10. What’s the point in arresting them? There isn’t any room in prisons so what can you do to them? A fine to avoid national service. Great essentially you just pay to get out of it

11. With how a portion of kids are nowadays is it really smart to round them up and have them use fire arms or work within a hospital or work with the police?

13. This seems a bit weak. They know they are going to lose and don’t have to follow through on anything so why not go whole hog.

    Promise to bring back hanging, shoot shop lifters on sight, send em back “where they came from”, sink boats in the channel, ban it (whatever it is). Just whatever the most ignorant and hateful shit they can think up.

14. National Service may be needed, but I find it should be on a voluntary basis, or as an alternative punishment laid down by the courts. But it isn’t really an incentive for many people to be trained and given a gun. Then you get sent to war to risk your life for a crap wage, which you get taxed on.

17. How would this be funded? I would imagine the trained armed services wouldn’t want to be babysitting slightly interested at best British teenagers who are forced to be there against their will
    – where would they all live? We’d have to build huge amount of barracks to accommodate everyone from scratch
    – how are we paying them?
    – future wars would need to be fought using highly skilled and motivated technicians, it’s not like sending a bunch of men in with bayonets
    – removing a lot of people out of the workforce and training them in something many won’t use long-term
    – Tories are really pushing this fear mongering atm, woke up thinking abt their messaging the last few weeks with the stockpiling and now this- we aren’t on the precipice of war but they’re trying to put it into our consciousness with this type of messaging

18. The exact wording is essentially “we haven’t figured out what to do if people refuse. That’s someone else’s problem”.

20. It’s a stupid idea but I love how this is all phrased as teens like they’ve just turned 13, whereas lowering the voting age to 16 is sensible because they are practically grown ups.

    I mean it’s technically the truth either way, I just find emotive headlines amusing.

21. So…where are these 700,000 18 year olds going to live and eat? Who is going to train them? I imagine half of them will fail the medical anyway. Absolutely bonkers and I say this as somebody who has worked in the MoD for many years.

22. They’ve seen how right wing you can make teenagers by forcing them into service in Isreal and decided they can win an election with an under thought plan that will appeal only to those already considering voting Tory. Pathetic.

23. The part I don’t understand is why start with a new generation of 18 year olds, if we accept the character building nature of service, why don’t we start with the generations which have been given a chance to “contribute to society” and failed to do so.

    I’m in my 40’s, have done pretty well for myself and done precisely fuck all for society apart from pay my taxes.

    I’m not entirely against the idea of national service, but the hypocrisy of it being introduced by generations who have done nothing but undermine the fabric of the society the principles of which national service is supposed to uphold disgusts me.

25. Honestly, i’m ok with this. I think the youth today are horrible and I think it would be good for them

27. I dont agree with it been used as a political football but I think it would help people to learn some self discipline, fitness and general life skills especially if they don’t know what life route they want to take

29. What is there to defend?

    You can’t appeal to a nationalistic spirit of a nation that’s been hollowed out and whored out for international banking interests.

30. I genuinely wasn’t going to bother voting at the general election as I haven’t in my past 2 Locals, but I’ve got 2 young boys who won’t be forced into something they dont want to do by a state that really doesn’t give a fuck about us. Especially something most of us have never been made to do.

    Fuck the Tories.
