this is what rt1 the road crossing the main island of new calonia looked like on Sunday after 6 days of violence with barricades blocking traffic including to the international airport French police and military forces removed the rioter hundreds of officers were flown over from Metropolitan France French authorities say they have restored Republican order releasing images of trucks removing charred cars and various objects from the road and of police officers patrolling Numa the capital the archipelago’s residents have long been divided on whether New Caledonia should remain part of France be more autonomous or fully independent those backing Independents are mostly part of the indigenous communities which represent only 39% of the overall population what sparked the latest violence was the French authorities plan to impose new voting rules which would Grant voting rights to thousands of new non-indigenous residents this would automatically diminish the weight of the indigenous community and ruin its hopes to get independence through a democratic vote on Sunday as roads and barricades were cleared people rushed to stores to get get groceries after days of being holed up in their neighborhoods

French forces smashed through dozens of barricades in a bid to retake the main road to New Caledonia’s airport and a top official said Sunday that Paris would reclaim all of the Pacific territory from independence militants “whatever the cost”.   3. For context, New Caledonians voted 3 times between 2018 and 2021 to stay French, in elections in which « newly » arrived inhabitants (those who arrived after 1998) did not have the right to vote (at the demand of the independentists).

  4. Stop French colonization. It's ridiculous for an island in the Pacific to be part of France. If colonization continues, the local Kanaks will lose their island and become a minority in their homeland.

  22. Everyone must calm down and try to reconcile the differences between all sides!!! How can it be that for the better part of a century the relations among all were fabulous ? People need to step back and re- examine what is at stake and not make hasty, rash, imprudent decisions.
