Hello! Just read your president’s position on NATO and difficult situation between Russia and Ukraine. Sometimes it happens that president doesn’t represent nation’s opinion. So I’m interested in regular people of Croatia point of view on this whole matter. Do you guys feel like your President represents your opinion correctly or is he full of shit?

Best regards from Lithuania!

Edit: I have read all the comments and will continue reading until last one of them. Really really intresting hearing different opinions with different arguments. To be honest, few of the comments really changed perspective on how I see this situation. Thank you for your time and input!

  1. He definitely doesnt’t represent my opinion. What he said is really bizarre. Although I’m used to the frequent nonsense he says, I was really stunned by what he said about Ukraine.

  2. He doesnt represent opinion that most of croats have. Croatian reddit is incredibly left wing and has strange obsession “Russia china good, west bad”. Most of croats stand with ukranians because not so long ago we were also fighting ocupation from far stronger opponent. General public wouldnt support That we directly send troops, but money/equipment donations would defnetly be done. Also we strongly stand by our Polish and other NATO allies. Whole goverment and many pepole have distanced themselves from Milanovics scandalous statement that he would withdraw troops event from nato allied countries. He even cant do that all by himself so its just him trying to mess up goverment which is led by opposing party.

    Hope its now more clear

  3. Our president has no real power, he has a mostly ceremonial role. And he is in constant fight with the government/prime minister. If our PM says that the sky is blue, our president will claim that the sky is actually red. So I’m not sure if the president actually thinks what he said regarding Ukraine or if he is just “forced” by his need to always be on the opposite side.

As for the actual opinion of an average person from Croatia, I think that an average person would probably be against our soldiers being deployed to Ukraine to fight Russia since it’s a foreign war. But at the same time I feel like an average person would definitely support Ukraine rather than Russia because our country was in a similar shitty situation a few decades ago.

  4. He often speaks very figuratively. He meant that if there is war between Russia and Ukraine, Croatia will not send troops to fight for Ukraine.

We have no obligation to do so, and I don’t want us to have that obligation.

I’m all for standing with our allies, including Baltic states. We should keep troops there and they should fight there if attacked. But Ukraine is not worth a world war, not now and like this, at least.

  5. We don’t give a fuck about anyone.
BUT, if there would be WW3 and we had to choose side, ofc we would go with Ukraine because NATO also would, and also Serbians fap on Russia (who doesn’t give a fuck about Serbia), so it’s automatically that we will go with Ukraine.

And what Milanovic said is common sense. Ukraine is not NATO member, therefore we aren’t obligated to help them. And why would we help them, our country is also in a shithole so there is no reason to spend money on shits like that, we have enough of our own problems.
Also that whole situation is USA showing muscles to Russia, and ofc ones who will get fucked is Europe. USA as always creating wars around the world and profiting from it. So why the fuck we should get involved in USA shit?

  6. Ukraine is not a NATO member, and should not be.

So we are under no obligation to send our troops there.

Let the ones who started this shit back in 2014 defend Ukraine. Although, knowing their track record, they probably will not.

  7. idk, i would say most of people support ukraine because its such a copy of our situation with serbia in 1990s. just in this case, serbia is a nuclear superpower

however, many people stan putin for some reason. which is plain stupid imo cuz putin sucks and so does russia

  8. He heavily disappointed me as a president. I am against war, but Ukraine helped us in the past. Also he is extremely rude and hypocrite and is clearly trying to gain Putins sympathy.

  9. Milanović won in direct elections and will likely win 2nd term. That means he has popular support and freedom to speak his mind, which he does quite often and with lots of poetic freedom. Unlike our prime minister, who rules with his horse-trading coalition and takes positions according to currently prevailing winds.

  10. Well, unlike the former president, Mrs. Kolinda Grabar Kitarović, Mr. Zoran Milanović prefers coke over schnapps so you get a whole new set of opinions and stances…

  11. For me this is funny the whole situation and its also sarcastic I kind see the problem(mybe) which Russia has and its not about Ukraine its more about how NATO is building its bases too close to the Russian border and the bases are also too close to the Russian capital city.
How to fix the problem? Easy stop building NATO bases too close to the “enemys” capital bcs NATO is a threat to Russia bcs of that and NATO is provoking that war. Idk why Russia isn’t saying that tho. As I see they can’t come up with that idea but they rather want to expand the terittory to the west so that the border is too far away from the capital city and that the NATO bases are also too far away from the capital city.

I think that thats the solution that NATO should stop building its bases and should remove them which are near the border and Russia would probbably stop with this and the Ukrainian borders might get re-integrated back to Ukraine by peace negotiation.

Its like if Germany captures Austria and Slovenia and starts building a base in Krško which is 20-40km away from the Croatian capital, first that would be a threat and we would be scared that thwy might invade us.

  12. Yes, we support this mostly, but this article is wrong in suggesting he would pull our troops out of NATO countries. He was talking Ukraine is not a NATO question and that he will not allow sending of Croatian troops in Ukraine. Then again saying that this is not a NATO thing but just a USA-Russia thing and that we don’t have to be a part of it..

  13. It’s really a complicated topic, it’s not just the question of sending troops in the matter of conflict. Sending troops to Poland, Baltic states in matter of conflict? Sure, you need to get full brunt and support of our armed forces.

But Ukraine is symptom of a wider problem and amassing our troops, European troops and Russian ones on the other side isn’t going to help calm it down. Let’s be frank, if there is war, we aren’t going to profit from it, not Croatia, not Germany, not France, not even Putin and Russia. Sure, for a short while his support might rise, but it’s not like he depends on it for his power. The ones that are going to profit are those 3000 kilometers away over the ocean and military-industrial complex makes maybe even more than 50% of their economy, directly and indirectly. Those that are going to profit are thousands kilometers to the east while we lose our economic power.

Washington won’t get bombed in the case of war. Las Vegas won’t be shelled. Helsinki, Vilnius or Riga might. And let’s be frank again and those Americans sent to die fighting won’t matter much to the guys in Raytheon, Lockheed-Martin who are sponsoring US senators with millions of dollars to get elected. They can earn billions in profits in case of war at the cost of few thousands of lives, you think they care about that? In the case of war, all of us would need to buy American weapons because they are world biggest arms factory. They would earn billions. In case of war, instead of Russian gas we would be buying and importing tons of American LNG. More billions earned. American economy is based on war.

The ones that need to solve this are us, Europeans whose blood was spilled countless times over this continent, not Americans. We had one of the most recent war experiences on this continent. We know what aggression is, but this is a symptom of a much, much larger geopolitical games. Crimea is a difficult story. Especially with our side and history. But there isn’t denying that Crimea was long, long a Russian territory which was given to Ukraine in the Soviet Union.

Europe, and EU needs to think with it’s own head, not American one. Nobody except Americans would profit from this escalating.

  14. Well, he is right. Why should we send and sacrifice our man when we have no gain from that conflict whatsoever? Let Americans be the world policemen that they think they are, we won’t intervene

  15. I for one, agree with what our president said and it reflects my opinion. With that said, stuff that other people mentioned about president being spiteful towards prime minister and having no real power. But as you asked opinion of the people, I am NATO sceptic, and not really fond of United States and their forgein policies. I think they use NATO as a tool for neoimperialisam

  16. His popularity keeps rising. Its because of his (loud) hot takes. Usually when everyone thinks something, only he will say it.

  17. What he told is true.
And what I think… I lost someone in Croatian war and I think myself there is no way to go in war for any kind of reason.

  18. I will provide my opinion as someone who is in the reserve of Croatian Army.

No. I do not believe a single Croatian or any other citizen should die protecting American interests in the most corrupt and poorest part of Europe. If Americans want, they can go die.

When I signed, I signed to defend the country. This is what the Army should be used for.

As for Zoran Milanović, I personally like him and voted for him. He is hit or miss a lot of time, but he is the only politican with balls.

  19. Hmm let me recall how many soldiers and tanks Ukraine sent to Croatia when we were invaded by a military power.

Yeah about 0? Good luck, Ukraine. We’ll take some of your refugees, no worries.

  20. Apart from the fact that he said that only for clout and for shitting on Plenković, also neglecting the fact that he is a narcissistic self-loathing asshole and opportunist of highest order, he articulated here very well on what in my opinion should my country do in case of war in Ukraine. Ukraine is not Croatia’s hill to die on in any shape or form, and it also does not violate any NATO obligation if our army just sits in barracks of Slavonia in case of a Russian invasion.

  21. It’s a personal position, not an official state position. President in Croatia has no political or legal power to do anything he said, including withdrawing the soldiers which is exclusively in the hands of the Parliament.

Unfortunatelly, all of this is internal political struggle between the populist President and the bureaucrat Prime Minister that’s gone too far, since the President opposes the PM on everything, and PM is very dedicated and vocal in his support towards Ukraine.

Generally, Croatian people – if out of nothing else then out of historic experience – predominantly stand with Ukraine and supporting it in this conflict is a non-issue, however question of sending actual soldiers there to fight a war would be a major political issue if it arises. Hopefully, it will not.

  22. Croatian people shouldn’t go to another country to die for them and fight a third country. We had our fair share of wars in history and it’s enough

  23. Where was ukraine and their troops when our fathers were dying in the early 90s? Where was nato? We were attacked and were defending yet noone came to help until way way way too many lives were lost and war was over. Why would we fight others wars when noone helped us? Fuck russia and fuck usa. If usa wants to fight with russia indirectly let them do it themselves. Im sad for ukraine tho, but its very unlikely that they will get invaded like croatia was, its most likely just that one small region that is predominantly occupied by russian citizens. War is hell on earth and americans sitting on their comfy sofas on the other side of the globe promoting war so they can sell weapons and weaken both eu and russia indirectly while sacrificing small countries can go fuck themselves. You have never seen war nor any representation of war and you dont know the horror it brings. Croatian war was over 30 years ago and we are still not even remotely recovered in a single sector. Calling croatians cowards while our nation defended against one of the biggest armies in europe at the time with mere 100k troops (70 in the very begginging) and no weapons nor means is just retarded. If you will call me a coward for wanting to avoid war you might as well come to ukraine, couch warrior, and we can fight the invaders together, how about that?

  24. Nope, he doesn’t represent how I feel about it at all really.
I feel sympathetic towards the Ukrainians very much so, especially since it wasn’t that long ago we were in a similar situation as them.
Ukraine is only being targeted cause they’re neither in Nato or the EU so going for them is much safer for Putin since no nation will ever directly get involved and all it can turn into is a proxy war where Western nation just send gear, supplies and maybe advisors.

Honestly If you folk in the baltics didn’t join Nato or the eu as soon as you did after the ussr collapse, you’d be seeing nowadays similar attempts of Putins Russia in trying to “liberate the oppressed Russian people in the baltics”. Said people who the ussr planted with their mass deportation of the actual native people living there to the far East and now are able to pull off stunts like these.
