  1. Warner Bros’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was greeted with a very warm reception during its Cannes Film Festival world premiere in an early showcase last week, and amid much love for franchise architect George Miller. It has followed up with strong critical and social scores. Nevertheless, in this currently wonky theatrical landscape, the prequel underperformed in its global opening this launch weekend, grossing $58.9M from 76 total markets through Sunday.

That includes $33.3M from overseas play and $25.6M from domestic; the latter for its Friday-Sunday. We are waiting on confirmation of the four-day North American number given the domestic holiday on Monday.

Yes, we expected higher when we did our preview earlier this week, and perhaps the industry as a whole was praying too much at the feet of this origin story. It’s undeniably got some amazing action.

Important to recall that while we think of 2015’s rock-and-roll Fury Road as a franchise renaissance (deservedly), that movie ended its run at $380M worldwide (unadjusted).

  2. They needed to name it, “Mad Max: Furiosa” to put the name in front? The other film was almost a decade ago, a different time, different marketing.

  3. Because they left out one important character…..

  4. Because the commercials made it look like a shot-for-shot remake of Fury Road but without the best part: Charlize Theron.

I’m sure it’s a well made film, but prequels always face an uphill battle unless you’re dealing with Star Wars nerds.

  5. They already put the “five movie collection” up for preorder.

  6. Anyone see it yet? I’m planning to go soon and was curious if it’s worth it

  7. Because the movie business has ruined going to the movies. No one rushes out to see anything on opening weekend anymore. Why bother. Decades of training people to wait until it shows up on streaming or rental means nothing is that big of deal.

  8. 2 people going to the movies with popcorn and drinks costs $150. That could be partly why.

  9. I don’t get why they went with a prequel instead of a sequel. I want to see what happens next to Mad Max or Furiosa or just the world in general in this wild post-apocalyptic setting they’ve created. I didn’t need a backstory that lands us at the start of the movie we’ve already seen (I assume).

If Theron didn’t want to do another film, and they wanted a tough female lead, why not follow the adventures of Furiosa’s (adopted or biological) daughter, and maybe have an old Max make a cameo. A passing on of the torch. Ah well.

Still looking forward to seeing it at some point, Anya Taylor-Joy is a draw for me for sure, but doesn’t seem as much an event as showing us what happens next.

  10. People. Don’t. Want. To. Go. To. The. Movies. It’s expensive. Are we gonna ask this question for literally every movie that comes out?

  11. This has been retreaded before and with mixed acceptance so I think they should be happy it did as well as it has

  12. I imagine that it’s underperforming for the same reason that McDonald’s is underperforming. Inflation is squeezing everyone and people are being more discriminating with their money spending habits. I will be interested in seeing the weekend gross compared to previous years.

  13. I feel like Anya Taylor Joy in this role is just confusing and doesn’t sell the movie well. I haven’t seen it so this isn’t even a criticism of how well she does in it… but from the outside, it seems like a very odd casting choice. Plus Charlize was very strong in the Furiosa role so you can’t help but compare initial impressions

  14. I just don’t like going to theaters anymore. I wait for stuff to be 6 bucks to rent

  15. I know this isn’t true everywhere, but while I was excited for this film, this holiday weekends weather is so spectacular I can’t imagine being inside. I am going to wait for the rain tomorrow or Monday. You don’t know when you’re gonna day days like this, gotta take advantage of them.

    (I am in NYC metro.)

  16. Do girls enjoy post apocalyptic racing movies? Furiosa was a sick character but the world is still a 10 year old kid’s version of a fun time. I’m curious if that was a factor.

  17. If I had a chance this weekend, I would’ve watched it. It looks really good

  18. I would say:

    • Prequels usually generate less interest.

    • People likely prefer a Mad Max story to a “spin off.”

    • Even if they do an amazing job, the casting of ATJ and CH could seem questionable to some viewers. Like, seeing their names attached didn’t make me want to see it more, but rather ask “can they pull it off?”

    • I have a sweet setup in my home, will be able to pause when I feel like it, and not worry about distractions by strangers. Sorry, I may be an elder millennial that used to love going to the movies, but even massive action blockbusters and a relatively close IMAX isn’t enough to get me to go anymore.

  19. Not everything needs to be a 5 movie franchise into lore building. I’m not sure why Hollywood thinks movie goers want this.

  20. Because it is too goddamned expensive to go to the movies. I went to a movie a few weeks ago by myself, bought a small drink and a small popcorn. Between that and the ticket I spent 45 fucking dollars. Fuck. All. Of. That. Noise. And it wasn’t even one of those “fancy” theaters that bring your food out to you, it was just a regular theater with old stadium seating.

You would need to take out a damn loan to bring a family to the movies these days

  21. because we wanted mad max 2 with Tom hardy and not furiosa

  22. Hollywood just laid off a huge chunk of the animation industry, and I know a lot of unemployed people rn, maybe spending $20 on a movie ticket isn’t in the cards (or pocketbook)

  23. Fury Road wasn’t a huge hit either. And this looks like more of the same but without Max himself or Charlize. Up till now, each Max movie had a different look and feel. Honestly, this looks too similar to Fury Road. I plan on seeing it, but I’m not excited to see it despite being a big fan of the franchise.

  24. Unrecognizable Chris Hemsworth and it’s a prequel and the action was Mad Max lite. Meh. I saw it, it was a fine movie but not amazing.

  25. Because matinees are like $12 now and so I don’t see anything. I love the theater experience but every aspect is overpriced. Big TV + Nice Soundbar = never going to the movies again.

  26. A good movie. George Miller doesn’t keep making the same movie. Yes there are some chases, but this movie is very different from the last, just as Fury Road was different.

  27. It’s hard when movies are really expensive and these come to bluray or streaming anywhere between 3-6 months . It’s also summer people are doing other stuff

  28. The last one made about 380 million worldwide, I don’t really see the issue. Mad max has never been a billion dollar franchise.

  29. I heard it was good.

Just.. not going to a theater to see it.

  30. People say it’s too expensive, but for me it’s that Friday, yesterday, and today were gorgeous weather days. I finally just sat down, exhausted, I’ve been all over the place. I spent a lot of money, way more than going to a movie would have cost, I can tell you that. I just couldn’t waste this weather being inside. I was at the beach, at an outdoors music venue, out to dinner al fresco, etc. Tomorrow is supposed to rain all day, and we are considering going to see a movie. But I might be too tired to leave the house!

  31. Movies audiences are becoming a lot more discerning. I’m wondering why there aren’t more GOOD horror films. Those always seem to do well.

  32. It’s a bleak, gritty and grungy movie about how a slave became a slave. Not exactly the kind of movie that families all agree to watch together on a holiday weekend.

  33. Probably going to win best sound design this year if Dune doesn’t.

  34. Don’t try too hard to separate it from fury road. It is an expansion of that story.

Lore aside, if you enjoyed fury road you will absolutely love this. It ticks every single box, and It does not attempt to overshadow or preclude the former in any way.

And, for fucking real, Hemsworth absolutely steals the show.

Go IMAX or don’t go at all.

  35. Saw it last night. It was excellent. Amazing world building. Still enjoyed fury road more though. The action and soundtrack for fury road were much better. I’d give this one a 9/10 and fury road 10/10.

  36. I just don’t want to see most movies in the theaters anymore. I’m find with waiting 3 day, 6 weeks or 6 month to catch it streaming in my living room.

  37. I think everyone is overestimating the draw of a decades long erratically released franchise known for low budgets and thin plots. These movies only appeal to a few kind of people – those that love bonkers action sequences that defy logic. I’ve never been a fan.

  38. The Mad Max movie with no Mad Max? I wonder why that isn’t doing well?

  39. Cuz we broke! And I’m sure it’ll be on a streaming service by the time that I have time to see it.

  40. Because I’m excited to watch it later. Probably in my living room

  41. I don’t want to go out to watch a movie anymore , it’s much better at home , I can pause or rewind and feel better pooping at home compared to a theater bathroom
