We now recognise some form of a Palestinian state, friendly matches should become regular enough that nobody feels the need to post about them – it should just be like any other country
Tho id love if the Irish government would put some pressure on the PA to actually try elections and not arrest journalists. The West Bank has gained a huge amount of international support recently, including from Ireland. A push to end pay-for-slay and accept Palestinian votes seems like the bare minimum for a state were actively supporting
Obviously we recognise states with worse human rights records and worse authoritarian regimes, but it seems israeli oppression (which is affecting the West Bank worse than gaza) has meant we’ve totally ignored the oppression of Palestinians by their own government
A minority of countries don’t recognise Palestine, And I’m glad we do, but don’t infantilise the PA as a victim
Their soccer team deserves to play anywhere in the world, womens team especially. And i think that’s going to happen. But just because we play soccer with them shouldn’t mean you forget that their government is horrific
Pressuring the PA into becoming an actual government will mean that Palestinians playing soccer isn’t a political move – it’s just soccer
We wouldn’t celebrate any other state with the PA’s authoritarianism, and we’re actually in a good position to push for better conditions for Palestinians without firing a shot
The tag of Gaza conflict isn’t really accurate tho probably the most appropriate, the team is from the West Bank, where any realistic recognition of Palestine lies
