General election: Sir Keir Starmer says Conservatives’ National Service plan will not work

1. Doesn’t matter. They own the narrative now. That’s what they do. They release stuff that gets everyone arguing. Then they look like the party of action. While Labour look like they won’t do anything.

   I hate the Tories, but Labour need to do better.

2. This proves that the Tories throwing out National Service like this has done its job. Starmer makes a pretty decent speech today yet this is the story coming out of it.

3. In other news water is wet, get that manifesto out Keir get on every radio station possible with regional affiliates and bag on about it over and over.

4. Starmer should have just asked the Tories to provide details of their proposal that weren’t scribbled on the back of a fag packet the day after the election was announced.

   Building Boris’s bridge to Ireland had more legs than this future shitshow policy .

7. Master stroke from the Tories. Everyone talking about something that will never happen, that no one wants, but people will argue vociferously with the imagined people they think hold an opposing opinion, just because.

9. The tories have regular meetings with the press. I don’t care what anyone thinks about print media but the right wing ones meet up regularly with Tufton street types (James O Brian mentioned this in a podcast) and they can sit down and decide a narrative. Sky and BBC then for some reason care what the papers say and tend to follow that narrative. The tories have got it stitched up.

   Labour, you would have thought would have more practice at countering this shit. I mean corbyn was just a mannequin of shit but you would have thought seamus milne being ex guardian would have known how to deal with it. Starmers labour have hot some of Blairs people in now but they’re just not as experienced

10. Why doesn’t he just say that it’s wrong and that it’s a terrible policy? By saying ‘it won’t work’ implies that he thinks there’s a right way of doing it, he’s playing straight into the Tories hands here

Its actually scary seeing the amount of people who were dead against voting Tory, now considering it based off this…I keep telling them…nothing else will get better…NHS will still be screwed, waiting lists won’t come down, train strikes, protests, prices of everything will keep going up, no flights to Rwanda, shit in your water, schools crumbling etc. Completely blinded by this stupid policy they wouldn’t have done themselves if they were young enough.

    Not only that…Tories want people to stay in school till 18, then do this…so anyone wanting to start their career at 16, or go off to college and study something their passionate about, you gotta wait till 19 at the earliest…that’s if other obstacles don’t get in the way. Oh and if you don’t do, you won’t be allowed to apply for a public sector job.

    I’m 42, dead against this…had I been made to do it…would have done nothing for me…18 was the best time of my life, had the best relationship I ever had, good friends I was seeing daily, having a great time at college and working a part time job. The introvert undiagnosed autistic me being forced into something like this, taken away from all the things I enjoy…actually probably wouldn’t have met that gf as I was 18 when I did. A skinny, 5’4 teen that got bullied through my entire school life, can’t imagine having to do that shit. This will cause more mental health issues than ever before.

    I get you should be proud and get learning skills but I got them myself from college, being around friends. Ain’t nothing to be proud of in this country…you do all this National service stuff, you still won’t be able to afford a home till you’re 40, be struggling to put food on the table. This isn’t going to be a war…its scare mongering at most…its what those who control the media do, to keep voting for these people who only have the interest of the rich.
