  1. > Taiwan introduced fines of NT$200,000 for bringing pork products to the island from countries affected by African swine fever (ASF) following an outbreak in China in 2018.

  2. EU, USA, Canada etc do the same – maybe not THAT much but still.

  3. That guy tried to sneak it thru and got caught.

    >An official from Taiwan’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency told local media that passengers could throw out any banned items they had mistakenly brought in using disposal bins before immigration control.

    >“You can dispose of them there or declare them at our animal and plant quarantine counters,” the official said. “Whether you choose to declare them voluntarily or dispose of them, there will be **no criminal liability involved**.”

    >A customs detector dog sniffed out the contraband and alerted its handlers. The visitor was fined NT$200,000 on the spot for the undeclared pork.

  4. I’m Mexican but live in Japan, one time my mother (without knowing it wasn’t okay) put a couple of spicy chorizo (pork) sandwiches in one of my suitcases – she thought it was going to be a nice surprise. It was actually, I didn’t get caught and the sandwiches were so good I ate them on my way back home from the airport 🥲

I’m literally just realizing how bad it could have been. Never again.

  5. Watched enough Australian Border Security episodes to learn not to bring ANY food in a foreign country.

  6. I was having dinner at a restaurant in Latvia, chicken nuggies, and they were not good at all. I didn’t want to offend the wait staff so I just snuck a couple into my jacket pocket. The next day I had a flight to Israel…… I totally forgot about the nuggs in my pocket. Was a tad embarrassing at security, but hey at least it wasn’t pork and no fine. just a few wtf’s from security.

  7. The chicken looks like it’s made from boiled egg whites.

  8. The fine isn’t for having the food; it’s for providing false information on an official declaration form. This article is garbage because they know this yet write the article as if the fine were imposed for having the food.

  9. Good, learn the fucking rules of a country before you try and enter…

  10. The ban on pork imports are very well known and very well signed at the airport. The person who got busted is stupid.

  11. Was in Taipei airport yesterday, the amount of signs you’d have to miss to bring that in is unbelievable. At least 10 different signs from the aircraft to immigration, and that’s not including the ad that’s played on the plane shortly before landing.

  12. Today in breaking news: Island nation has biosecurity laws?

  13. I just visited Taiwan. Prior to landing, the air crew was very specific about prohibitions on bringing foods into the country.

  14. When entering, they specially tell you to throw away. Yet they tried to hide it.

  15. He got what he ask for, with multiple chances to save their ass and money, but noooo, he has to go the find out route.

  16. People don’t consider how important it is to never import foreign foods. Can single handedly decimate ecosystems and food chains. Environmental warfare is very real

  17. Of course it’s an indonesian lol, as an indonesian, we can be a bit of a privileged people, especially since they can travel to other countries, so they are certainly wealthy (the wealth gap is phenomenally large, you either live in a mansion or a shack).

  18. Expensive combo platter…but everything’s gone up.

  19. “The Indonesian national had arrived from Hong Kong on April 30 when a quarantine dog sniffed out the “roast chicken and pork combo”, said the Taiwanese Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency. ”

“Do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”

    -That Sniffer Dog

  20. Funny story: Back in 1999, one could cross into US from Canada with just a driver’s license. No visa or passport required.

My family and I were crossing the border to see Niagara Falls from the other side. The US agent asked us if we have nay fruits or veggies, and my dad showed him a giant bag of oranges (about 3kg) for my siblings and I because we loved the fuck outta oranges at the time.

The agent said we can’t take those, will have to throw in the trash. My dad, being a cheap-ass Pakistani immigrant, was like “fuck no”. We parked to the side, and ate the whole bag in like 3 minutes…

  21. Cringe clickbait headline, there are a LOT of fucking flus going around, and the guy was basically caught smuggling one in by ignoring protocol. Get fucked abc.net.au

  22. Honest question: The article says that the tourist was deported because they were unable to pay the fine. So meaning that they no longer need to pay? Will they have any trouble entering next time?

  23. I wish driving fines were this high. Seems like this person (and anyone who reads the headline) will not be trying this again

  24. I meal prep for flights so far too many times i am in a race to finish my macros while in the customs line before reaching the officer.

  25. The US has been a lot more strict with this the last two times I’ve traveled.
