Can Trump Really Slam the Brakes on Electric Vehicles? He has vowed to shred President Biden’s E.V. policies and has threatened that “You won’t be able to sell those cars.”

  1. Currently US automakers are in both ICE and EV development. They have invested billions on EVs but they are stuck with both. They had several good years during COVID where they could push expensive ICE models. Meanwhile China poured a lot of effort into EV design, supply chain, and manufacturing. As a result they have passed the West and the US can’t let Chinese cars into the US market without tanking the US industry. Trump can’t unilaterally repeal laws so unless he also controls Congress the IRA will remain. But he can definitely “throw sand in the gears”. If he does this then the US will increasingly become its own ICE island. Other countries will welcome cheaper Chinese EV imports. In ten years the US will start to look like Havana with its 1950’s cars. In the end continuing ICE is a losing proposition.
