NATO is discussing to take part in protection of the skies over Western Ukraine, Bild reports. In favor: Estonia, Great Britain, Poland, Canada, Lithuania, and France. Against: The U.S. and Germany.

1. Needed and great step, but nothing more than a paper promise from Canada.

   Successive governments and lack of care from the general public means we as a Nation don’t have shit with which we could defend the skies of Western Ukraine, let alone most of our own sky/borders.

5. I don’t see why unanimity is required. Estonia, Britain, Poland, Canada and France should just start. Implement a no fly zone close to the border of neighboring countries participating in the No Fly zone effort and then extend it as they build capability and work out the kinks in the system. Just providing protection for a 50km square region is something, allowing Ukraine to use that as a reliable basing/staging area. Heck, guaranteeing protection for even a single Ukraine airfield would be huge, by providing a safe harbor of repair and maintenance for the F-16s Ukraine will soon be receiving.

   The US and Germany will join the project eventually once it is demonstrated that the sky doesn’t fall and Russia isn’t launching nukes when a few Kalibrs are shot down from Poland based batteries.

8. So tired of seeing my country (U.S) holding back and acting like a bunch of bitches. I get the caution, I do, but we are beyond escalation at this point. Russia is doing everything it can to create hostilities around the world and are pushing every button they can. Meanwhile we won’t even let the Ukrainians use our weapons in Russia, giving the terrorists a safe haven to strike across the border with impunity.

10. All the people slamming on the US need to realise that once the election is done, IF Joe wins then expect a far more “hands on” approach from the US.

    In the long-term, the MOST important thing for Western Democracy is for Biden to get re-elected.

    The politics at play is frustrating for the rest of us, but we cannot afford for Trump to get his second term, especially right now. There needs to be a lot of faith and patience with the Biden administration as they are walking a fine line in which they must succeed.

11. Just enforce a no fly zone over western Ukraine. If it flies, it dies.

13. Canada steps up again for the morally right side of another European conflict. U.S. cannot decide whether to invest in a Ukrainian victory or defeat. Perhaps Biden is too old to take a strong stand?
