Wow, this is a huge surprise, as virtually all recent polls have showed them neck and neck with the center-right Social Democratic Party. And almost everyone thought that even if the Socialists won the most seats, they’d still need support from the smaller leftist parties in order to govern. But the Socialists defied the odds to win 117 seats of the 230-seat parliament, up from 108 in the 2019 election. The last time a party won a majority of seats in Portugal was in 2005 (also by the Socialist Party).
The Socialists probably had a better ground game to get out the vote given the close polling.
I’m so happy for the portuguese LGBT community! Their rights are safe and secure and the far-right even though had some growth it won’t have power nor influence
A conservative/right leaning goverment similar to those in Spain between the extreme right (PP) and the Far-Right (Vox) with Chega having power and influence would have been catastrophic for human rights and the rights of minorities
Right-wingers seem to forget that LGBT people and their allies vote, that women vote, that minorities vote and they aren’t going to let they rights being taken away
> In 2017 prime-minister António Costa’s government passed new laws to boost immigration, with the legislation taking effect in the autumn of 2018.
>
> “We need more immigration and we won’t tolerate any xenophobic rhetoric,” Mr Costa said at the time.

>The government is celebrating rising immigration numbers after the number of foreign nationals living in the country hit half a million for the first time in its history.
>
>The socialist-led government said Portugal had “overcome” barriers to attracting more migrants, who it says are needed due to the country’s relatively low birth-date and ageing population.
Hmm. Whatever they’re doing, they seem to be retaining popularity while running pro-immigration policy.
