  3. Look, I appreciate the attempt to give the Ukrainians more choice in their targetting parameters with partner-supplied weapons. But Macron’s simplistic solution won’t work for long. The Russians-by and large-aren’t directly bombarding Ukraine from Russian bases per se. They’re doing it from the field or air, not fixed bases.

    As soon as the Ukrainians start hitting these back with counterbattery fire, the Russians will just move their attacking forces near to civilian areas, ala Hamas / Hezbollah. When the Ukrainian counterbattery fire starts blowing up mosques (that the Russian artillery hides behind) or the inaccurate volumes of Russian AAA starts damaging civilian facilities (or killing civilians) then the usual recriminations / proxy propaganda / intentional propaganda will commence in force.

    If you let Ukraine take the gloves off with your kit, then you can’t attach the ‘but not against civilian targets’ rider. Because-intentional or not-civilians will be ‘involved’ before you know it.

    It seems like France is saying they permit engagement of attack forces but not the logistical tail.
