Ooooooooh. Ooh this is *biiig.*
I don’t know if *this* platform can do it, but American and Japanese AWACS birds were supposedly able to provide radar guidance to blind-launched AAMs thirty years ago. If it *can* do that, there’s a chance that something similar could be worked out for Ukraine’s S-300 launchers. That’d let the SAMs get a lot closer to the front- and those damned glide-bombers- without it’s radar emissions giving away it’s position and making it a target.
The radar is almost certainly powerful enough to zorch the radar seekers on Russian long-range AAMs, so it can defend itself from air attack.
Damn, Sweden, y’all know how to give what really helps.
>The aircraft performs approximately the same functions as the Russian A-50, only it is smaller, newer and cheaper.
>It will provide completely new airborne radar reconnaissance and combat control capabilities against targets in the air and at sea.
>This means increased long-range strike capabilities for Ukraine against targets. The aircraft have a target detection radius of up to 500 kilometers.
1. A-50 have radar range of up to 700km, so that part isn’t correct. Unless the ASC-890 can pump it more.
2. Increased strike capabilities ain’t happening without unrestricted munitions ([which ain’t happening](https://www.washingtonpost.com/video/world/kirby-us-weapons-should-not-be-used-to-hit-russia/2024/05/28/af269a59-3f75-45b5-9841-52b8854a17ce_video.html))
3. RB-99 is AMRAAM. Meaning that US, unfortunately, retains leverage as licenser to call off any firing permissions
This should take away any radar advantage that russian fighters might have had over UA’s f-16’s.
