  1. The article doesn’t give it, here’s the link to the [***Municipal Health Service’s own article***](https://www.ggd.amsterdam.nl/onderzoeken/resultaten-gezondheidsmonitor-jeugd-2023/) where they provide the PDF showing the statistics.

As for the article in English (*DeepL-translated, any Dutch speaker is welcome to correct*):

    >Research by the Dutch health service GGD shows that acceptance of LGBT+ people is dropping dramatically among young people. The figures from Amsterdam don’t lie. Only *43%* of young people say they accept homosexuality, compared to *69%* two years ago. Among boys, only *a third* find homosexuality acceptable, while among girls, *roughly half* have this opinion. The survey was conducted among young people between the ages of 13 and 16.

    >

    >Although the drop is dramatic, the figures fit the picture that Amsterdam is becoming an increasingly unsafe place for gay people to walk hand-in-hand in the streets. Incidents of anti-LGBT+ violence regularly make the news. For example, there have been incidents of violence in the LGBT+ entertainment area, Reguliersdwarsstraat, a drag queen has been attacked on public transport, Pride flags have been set on fire and a gay couple frequently faced violence from a group of youths.

    >Acceptance rates are also declining in other Dutch regions. In Utrecht, acceptance of homosexuality dropped from *71%* (in 2019) to *46%*. In the province of Zeeland, for example, transgender acceptance is dropping sharply. Two years ago, *46%* of young people considered trans persons “*normal*,” now only *a quarter* do. Also, the percentage of young people who consider trans persons “*wrong*” in the province has increased from *13* to *25%*.

Edit: The question asked (or at least shown in the results) was “*Vindt het normaal dat 2 mensen van hetzelfde geslacht verliefd op elkaar zijn?*” / “*Do you find it normal for 2 people of the same sex to be in love?*”

    Boys- 32%

    Girls- 53%

    Total- 43%

  2. Terrifying. That trend needs to be reversed with the most extreme urgency.

  3. This is a huge drop. I wonder what had caused such a difference.

  4. How is that even possible in the country that literally legalised same sex marriage first in 2001? Doesn’t make sense. Also the Dutch are historically with the highest percentages for acceptance of homosexuality worldwide.

  5. What do they think has caused this? Has there been an increased religious demographic and/ or have young people being moving further to the right generally?

  6. I never understood straight men having a problem with gay men. Every gay man means less competition, you’d think straight men would welcome their improved chances.

  7. Now I understand why the Netherlands is turning into a fascist state increasingly influenced by drug gangs.

  8. Hate propaganda is effective at shifting people’s opinions and Russia has been pumping social media full of it.

  9. I like how so many people in this thread think declines from 20 to 30 p.p. *in just two years* are attributable solely to Muslims. Like, sure, parties have failed to stop letting them in and/or have failed to integrate them, but in that case don’t you think these kinds of declines would have shown up in prior years?

  10. It must be shitty data, it’s impossible to achieve such drops in just 2 years.

  11. Social media BS like Andrew Tate and Russian propaganda are mostly responsible for this. I know people here want to blame Muslims and immigrant but a 20+% swing in 2 years is way to big of a change for that to be the case.

  12. r/europe not blaming immigrants challenge difficulty: impossible

  13. Well that’s scary to hear as I’m getting a nephew soon. I hope this goes away soon, I don’t want to risk him being stabbed if he turns out gay

  14. This is a bizarrely large drop for a country like the Netherlands that I haven’t seen in any other recent survey tbh, without other surveys/polls confirming this it feels like a bit of an outlier.

  15. Social media propaganda is infecting more and more people with bigotry. It’s so frustrating.

  16. this quote from the Witcher 3 comes to mind so often lately…
“Hatred and prejudice will never be eradicated, and witch hunts will never be about witches. To have a scapegoat, that’s the key. Humans always fear the alien, the odd. Once the mages had left Novigrad, folk turned their anger against the other races, and as they have for ages, branded their neighbors their greatest foes.”

  17. This is extremely sad to hear.

I always thought the Dutch were quite accepting of all sorts of people.
The right winds are blowing hard in Europe.

  18. Doesn’t suprise me honestly, on the one hand you have the growing far right that screams against percieved degeneracy, on the other you have a very vocal crowd of actual degenerates that claim to represent the LGBT community.

The large reasonable majority that just wants to live and let live gets drowned out

  19. Tiktok (and other social media). These apps only show media that aligns with the users existing views because of personalization. This creates echo chambers where no outside perspectives are introduced. Radical opinions spread easier when there are no counter arguments or if those arguments have little backing.

The ’For you’ page on Tiktok, and doomscrolling on personalized social media in general, will be absolutely devastating to todays youth. Echo chambers, short attention span, literally time wasted as one can not remember anything they have just seen, and constant distractions and easy escapism from things that actually matter such as friends, family, and school.

  20. Why? What’s the point? Nobody is being gay at you! There is nothing you need to do. No songs to learn. Just live your shitty life.

  21. Tbh you’re not even allowed to be in the center anymore. You either approve everything mainstream from one side or you get cancelled. All lgbt+ places are now safe areas, same with places on the right. Youre no longer able to discuss or disagree since youll just get banned.

  22. This is something the government should invest heavily into, imo. It’s a shame there is such a brain dead government now

  23. I think we need to stop and consider the wording of the question these Amsterday youth answered. The question was not whether they accept homosexuality but if they think it’s “normal.” (see the comment from OP)

Normal is a tricky word that can be interpreted many different ways. A respondent could very well be accepting of homosexuality, even consider themselves an ally, and still say no it’s not normal when asked the question from this report because they interpreted the word normal like being the default or the majority.

Do we know if the older figures are responses to the same exact question, or just a similar but differently worded one that might have been interpreted in another way? With statistics you always gotta be wary of language and how it’s being presented to you vs what data was actually collected, especially when it’s translated from one language to another like Dutch to English in this case.

I’m not saying this explains the drastic change entirely or even at all, but it’s definitely something not to overlook.
