  1. One person was killed Wednesday afternoon after they fell into the running engine of an aircraft at Schiphol Airport. The incident was first reported to authorities around 3:10 p.m., records show, and a massive response by emergency services workers arrived at the scene.

There were passengers and crew members on the Embraer aircraft when the incident happened. “All passengers and employees of the flight in question have disembarked and are being taken care of,” said the Marechaussee, the branch of the military responsible for policing the airport. Their office is investigating the incident.

It was not immediately clear if the person who was killed was a private individual, or if they worked for the airline, another company, or the airport. The Labor Inspectorate told NL Times that they were sending someone to the scene to find out more about what happened, and if it should be classified as a workplace accident.

The case was also going to be investigated by the Dutch Safety Board (OVV). Three investigators were sent to handle an initial examination, an OVV spokesperson told NL Times.

“There was a horrible incident today in which a person ended up in an aircraft engine,” a Schiphol spokesperson told ANP. “Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we are providing assistance for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this.”

  2. Now I’m curious… How do you FALL into a jet engine? They usually mounted pretty horizontal and people tend to fall rather vertical.

  3. There are strict rules there, a shame that even with those it happened

  4. Incidents like this make me anxious when boarding a plane without a jet bridge.

  5. Nothing good ever happens at Schiphol Airport. This is not even the worst experience you can have there.

  6. When TV show Lost was aired I was a kid and while I didn’t actively watch it, I incidentally saw a scene in which a character was sucked into a jet engine. This scene is now ingrained in my memory.

  7. How often does this happen? I thought this was more of an urban legend type of death.

  8. Hopefully spaghetti bolognaise wasn’t one of the in-flight meal options.
