Sweden to send Ukraine military equipment worth $1.3 billion – Including airborne surveillance and control aircraft

1. Sweden’s delivery of the ASC 890 aircraft to Ukraine is a huge deal, this can hardly be overstated. These planes are basically flying surveillance powerhouses, and they’re going to make a massive difference for Ukraine’s defense.

   First off, the ASC 890 can detect and track targets like aircraft, ships, and missiles from really far away—up to 300-400 km. This means Ukraine will have much better awareness of what’s happening in the air and at sea. They can turn off some of their ground-based radars (which are easier to target) and rely on these planes instead. Plus, with the F-16s coming from other countries, this is perfect timing. The ASC 890s will help guide the F-16s more effectively and keep them safe.

   Yes, these planes will need to stay away from the front lines to avoid being shot down, but their range is so good that they can still cover critical areas like Crimea and parts of Russia near the border. This extends Ukraine’s ability to monitor and respond to threats significantly.

   Of course, Russia will do everything it can to take out these 890s, so Ukraine will need to be smart about how they use them. But overall, this is the type of support Ukraine needs and in my opinion the junior NATO member Sweden is setting a new benchmark for everyone else.
