More of a chance of a United Ireland then the NHC being completed
Who could have seen THIS coming.
I would not be shocked at all if something criminal was at play in getting this delayed. Either through fund embezzlement or some other form of corruption. I refuse to believe it’s down to mere incompetence

Damn I was looking forward to reading the winds of winter there.
Note how the news articles never give reasons for the delays or cost increases. I have heard horror stories from people working there about the state of the design, there was a point where there were 700 drawings being issued or revised every week. I don’t know how any contractor would manage to keep on top of all the change orders and claims that would arise from so many changes.
Sometime between this Sunday and the heat death of universe would be a more reliable time estimate
snag-list from Hell incoming…

When are we building a monorail atop the hospital that gets you around the building efficiently
Ah the state. Unlimited funds, why rush.
Hospitals are some of the most complex buildings we have, there’s so many interdependant eliments, power, water, o2, diffrent hepa systems, ac, sewage, backups for everything. I’m not uprised it’s delayed, and it’s kinda unfair to insuinatr incompetent or illegal actions.
BAM, and the money is gone!
VOTE FFG AGAIN FOR CHANGE!
In Limerick, a private company have built a brand new [state of the art hospital](https://www.bonsecours.ie/new-limerick-hospital). Development began in 2023 and it’s set to open in 2025. This began construction in 2016 and it’s STILL not finished.
How on earth? I understand the size difference but even with that factored in, this is complete corruption and ineptitude. Anything HSE is so badly managed.
It’s taken so long that by the time it opens it’ll be a geriatric hospital.
I’m going to make a prediction that after this project is eventually completed, we’ll hear nothing but “issues with construction”, “poor planning”, “short sightedness”. I wouldn’t call myself a betting man but this I would throw a few pound on.
At this point in time you have to wonder if they’re trying to build the 8th wonder of the world.
Hoping to never have to visit this place

When you scam someone for a billion and they do nothing, you keep going until they do.
Originally costed at 400m and now at 2.2bn.
Built in an awful location. No one held accountable. Seriously lads, we’re a bit thick. OUR TAX MONEY!!
This is one of the most expensive infrastructure projects in the history of mankind in a country where children still cannot get basic scoliosis treatment
I’m sure there will be a book or two written about this project in the coming years. And there will be university lecturers who will get great mileage from the related case study in mismanagement. I’m sure a lot of the root cause will come down to a lack of application of fundamental project management governance and rigour.
But we are where we are now and we must all realise that further delays and increased costs will be a reality on an ongoing basis for this project. Why? Because there was no change to the project management processes or personnel. You can’t expect different results if everything stays the same. It’d be shocking if it wasn’t so predictable from a state department.
And for anyone with any doubts, in the last report from the hospital board to an oireachtas committee it was made clear the cost was tracking to €2.2Billion, but this was just the build cost. The build cost did not include the cost of commissioning the hospital. No indication was offered for this cost. So it was always going to increase beyond €2.2Billion.
The originally estimated cost was €650Million. Somebody in government signed this budget off. This approval must be recorded somewhere on a document or the minutes of a meeting. And each time the hospital board asked for more money it was approved. It is a clear case of the sunken cost fallacy, “ah sure we’ve gone this far we need to complete it”. The government have given approval for the budget go 3-4 times over. Ultimately they are accountable for that.
I live in Limerick. We have a major health crisis in the mid-west. We hear promises but do not get enough resources. In the mid-west I’ve also watched the Bon Secours initiate and pursue the build of a high tech private hospital with minimal fuss in Limerick. When they finish you can be sure it will have been tight to their budget. See the details below. So these projects can be done. They just need control and leadership from the start.
Next time outsource the project to a private company, who will design and build the project. They can then deliver the keys to the HSE when it’s ready. Paying a commission/fee will be far less the cost of this mess!
Bons Secours Ballysimon
Budget: €150 Million (media reports are spend is on track)
Duration: 5 years
Beds: 150
Status: On track for completion in 2025
Children’s Hospital
Budget: €650Million
Current spend: €2.2Billion
Duration: 10 Years (2016-2026)
Beds: 380 individual rooms
Status: Late & overbudget
I’m sure it will open by 2035. Won’t be any nurses or consultants to staff it, though, so only a few beds will be available and they’ll be stacking children in the corridors.
I’m in St James all the time for treatment and christ alive it’s going to be hilarious when it eventually opens. I can imagine the chaos. It’s in such a tightly built up area of Dublin and doesn’t make sense to me at least. When I saw it first I was actually like…is this an avengers hub or something from the movies it’s ginormous
1. Is there a breakdown anywhere of what all these 100’s of millions of euro are being spent on
2. when are heads going to roll over this. Its fine to blame the government, but the lads in the civil service who are there all the time even when the government changes need to take heat for this.
The worlds first and only €3bn hospital.
People should go to prison for this. After the 20 year inquiry that will cost another €50m.
