This is an interesting case. The right to terminate copyright is a weird niche thing in the law, and I don’t think it’s that frequently used. I’m not really clear on its purpose either. As I read it, the initial action was within her rights, and the judge had to decide on the question of which is more important: federal law, or the divorce decree. And the judge was convicted by Cher’s lawyers that it would be the latter.
I still am shocked to find out there’s any royalties whatsoever today from that uniformly terrible music. Who the F is listening to Sonny and Cher in 2024?
