So when I watched Pingu it was the first time ever I watched TV, along with Barbapapa and Pimpa was one of my favourite childhood cartoon, but I later found out that many people I know considered it depressing and creepy.

Do you agree with them or do you find it marvellous like I do?

  1. Pingu was cool.

Certainly not the most depressing stuff I watched as a child. There was also the series where:

    * The father of a Bosnian girl dies
    * The girl has to go with her mother and their wagon pulled by a donkey to France where her grandpa lives. Since the mother of the girl isn’t French, he naturally hates her
    * The mother dies
    * The girl has to sell the donkey and walk on foot
    * When she arrives in France, the grandfather is blind and she has to work in his factory

    Lighthearted stuff

  2. I never understood why a pinguin speaks Danish and why nobody ever bothered to dub it.

  3. The seal is creepy, everything else is peak European comedy

  4. Most successful swiss media export, ofc I like it.
But as an adult I find it actually much funnier than back when I was a kid

  5. Great lad. Bit of a crybaby at times, but I guess he is meant to almost be a baby. Dad would not survive modern day feminism if it was shown today.

  6. Depressing? did they see any japanese cartoon from the 80’s/90’s? The lucky ones had only one dead parent

  7. I love Pingu, I also love the fact that the show was a success everywhere but the United States. Yet another simple thing Americans just can’t comprehend.

  8. Utter genius. I am big enough to admit that this completely undermines my previous post suggesting that the Swiss have made no significant contribution to Western culture.

  9. I preferred Moomins over Pingu tbh. The episode where something creepy came slowly towards the house for what seemed like 30 minutes fucked me up forever.

  10. I still think about that one dream episode from the show. Full on nightmare fuel.

  11. Pingu was great, but I didn’t really like this subtle play on global warming, I preferred to be on the sunny side of life with senior Rossi…

I could relate more to something like:

    One man’s childhood is another man’s nightmare…

Or Maybe I had Longing for Italy, the secret Goethe in me, because I also liked:

Or was it the complaining part that I could identify with?

  12. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who didn’t love Pingu – well done, mountain Germans.
