I just came across this article from 2 months ago saying James Bowen had to sell his house due to mortgage rates increasing and is struggling again.

I'm really devastated to hear this, his book was really an eye-opening experience for me when it comes to homelessness and addiction and it's dreadful to think he's going through it again.

  1. Christ that’s a depressing read. Hope he shakes the heroin and finds a way out of his situation again, but you can’t help but feel his opportunity was lightning in a bottle. Very sad.

  4. Addiction is so grim. If I had to guess, his being dropped by his agent after the cat died probably had more to do with him starting heroin again after the cat died and not writing. The statue fundraiser he set up raised £125,000 — I note that when the town of St Andrews commissioned a statue of a cat in the early 2010s it cost them just £5000. Where did the rest of the money go? One million pounds for the earlier books and films might not be as big when spread over twelve years but God, what a lot is us wouldn’t do for an £80k income annually for a decade.
