6 months is an obscene amount of time in your head
Ah, It’s a willy!
Not to bad my nephew in age 12 was waiting there years when he got letter to see consultant we couldn’t believe
Not just mental health, I’ve twice gotten letters for appointments that were to take place the following morning. When I told them I couldn’t get time off work at such short notice it was met with a fair dollop of passive aggression and re-scheduled months later.
A lot of stuff “taken care of” by the HSE is treated as a joke.
I’m so sorry they cancelled this on you. I have been through the ringer with mental health services here over the past 8 years. It’s a shit show.
I know this isn’t an option for a lot of people. But if you can go private please do. If borrowing the money is an option do this. Some private places also will help with a payment plan.
Obviously I’m not going to ask what exactly your issue is. But If it’s in any way relayed to adhd/asd I can give you the names of a great person.
Edit:
I’ve just seen the end of your letter says adhd. I’m recently diagnosed. In total it cost me €700 over two sessions for the diagnosis’s. I’m now on medication and therapy. It is life changing. Feel free to send me a pm if you like. Take care.
Talk to me, whats the matter. In all seriousness i hope it gets sorted
Was told wait 2 years for ADHD appointment
Fuck the Department of Health
It’s hard to adopt an American style for profit healthcare system with a functioning public service.
Classist Fine Gael wanting financial eugenics should not be a surprise.
Why are letters still a thing ?
Why are you not automatically added to a real-time wait list where you can see in real-time where you are and availability?
That shouldn’t be that harz to do.
Fuck the mental health sector, they don’t give a fuck about us. Everytime I go I’m rushed out as quickly as possible, I’ve had to fight my depression without them.
Mental health service is a disgrace in this country, I have bipolar disorder for 30 years. I knew 4 people who left mental health appointments and walked straight to the river.
Personally I have lost count of the times a doctor told me to ” pull yourself together ” ,once a psychiatrist said to me , ” buy a new car, I just picked up my new BMW and I feel great”. This was said to me while I was an inpatient in a mental hospital . OP, I hope you get the help that you need and deserve, take care of yourself
My brother got diagnosed with ADHD when he was 8. His primary school (CBS) recognised the diagnosis and provided supports as appropriate.
When he went to secondary (CBS) the school did not recognise the diagnosis and would not provide any supports for him as a result, they wouldn’t even recognise it to excuse his behaviour l, chalking him down to be a bold child.
The school wanted a diagnosis from CAHMS. It took 5 years to get into a room with them. He was in there for two hours discussing various things and mentioned that he smokes weed.
CAHMS completely wrote him off at that point and said they would have no further dealings with him until he stopped smoking weed. He didn’t take that very well and berated the psychiatrist but that’s besides the point.
He’s going to finish school this year and honestly he hasn’t done very well, he had no access to any school supports (not that there were very many) and cannot get DARE. He won’t even be allowed sit his LC in a private room.
Ah ADHD. Had to wait 6 months too, only for the psychiatrist to ask if i can watch tv or if i have ever read books. Oh you have? **No adhd**. Diagnosed me with depression (didnt tell me this, i found out off my GP).
Took finding a private adult ADHD specialist, and getting a referral from my GP (and obviously spending a rake of money) to get seen and assessed properly. Legit changed my life too, understanding *why* i am the way i am + the therapy and medication.
Unfortunately, you’ll probably have to try the private route if you want to be seen properly. It was a struggle for me at the time, so i completely empathize that its a massive pain in the ass to be looking at bills of several hundred euro
being an adult (or in your late teens) and getting diagnosed with a disorder like this can be particularly hard. its taken me four years now to get diagnosed with asd. this may not even be the case at all regarding your appointment delays but the only research done on neurodivergence is on young children so that may make it harder. im sorry things are like this for you
I was sent to one for suicidal ideation. Waited 18 months and was told that they sent a letter that never came. I was the only one in the house and they lied through their teeth, north Dublin. The workers in mental health services in are awful here, they don’t care. Change their office location and instead of unpdating their contact info they took it down from the HSE and own sites. Wrong address, no phone number. 6 cunts collecting money to tell people lies, I called in and they didnt see anyone over 2 hours.
Yep. Been waiting for 8 months to get a consultation regarding an eating disorder. They just sent a letter delaying it another 3 months… so that’s 11 months just to TALK to a doctor
I am still waiting on a dermatologist appointment. Its been a year and at the 6 month point they actually called go make sure I still wanted the appointment
This isn’t even a Covid thing. I waited 2 years in 2012 to get an appointment for adult ADHD. Ended up going private. But understandably it’s expensive and not everyone can access it.
It’s so terrible. I was on a waiting list since the start of may for sexual assault therapy and have only started my therapy sessions in January. Between that time period I was so badly struggling and couldn’t eat or sleep because I was so anxious. The HSE treat mental health like something people can wait months and years to receive some sort of care not regarding how extremely serious mental health is :/
I’m currently into year… 2? of waiting for an apt at a specialist pain clinic to deal with some nerve damage in my hand… I’m also a full-time career for an adult with disabilities… so yeah, what fun. I might have an apt in 2 more years tho! so thats good right?
700 Empty consultant posts,esp psych.every apt needs a consultant
I did not know you can get public assessments for ADHD as an adult in Ireland. When i was diagnosed as autistic last year, I had to go the private route and it was quite expensive. Getting my diagnosis was a life changer for me, hopefully yours can be too. Good luck with everything OP.
Worse than that, they drew a penis in whiteout over the signature.
I waited two years for my local mental health clinic to get a psychologist, I had one appointment with her, heard nothing for a year, and then I find out she left. Not to mention the fact that the place keeps trying to discharge me, despite not having actually dealt with any issues. At my most recent appointment there, I was told to ask my GP about an online service that the HSE apparently has. My GP has never heard of it. I am fed the fuck up with this shit.
I use Better Help or the K Health app. They’re inexpensive and there’s no waiting
In the states they just tell you to fuck off if you don’t have €300 for a 15 minute appointment and €500 a month for adderall
I was once told at my referral by a trained professional that I was just a bit sad and nothing to worry about, discharged back to my gp. I later tried to kill myself. I think about that every time I see some god awful tragedy involving mental health. I was lucky that my attempts failed but it wasn’t for a lack of trying or because I got appropriate mental health care even though I was begging for it.
Its appalling how mental health is treated In this country. Some people don’t even make it to the appointments, because well… don’t think I need to fill in the blanks 😪
The kids are waiting years. Yes, years. We had to go private with a suicidal undiagnosed autistic on our family’s hands. OT had a waiting list of 3 years, after that. This isn’t good enough.
