A Fianna Fáil senator has said it is “highly ironic” that many of those condemning violence in Gaza also commemorate the IRA.
Ned O'Sullivan told the Seanad that the Government was right to recognise the State of Palestine, but the timing of the announcement has played into the hands of terror group Hamas.
“A great number of the people who are most vociferous in their condemnation of the violence and atrocities being perpetrated in Gaza have no problem countenancing commemoration services for the Provisional IRA,” said Mr O’Sullivan.
These were “people who massacred thousands of people in our own country, including thousands of people of the Catholic faith, and [people] seem to have no difficulty in balancing those two.
“We have to be consistent here. If you are going to stand up and condemn what is happening in Rafah, then you cannot be embracing and welcoming the people who murdered my friend, (Detective Garda) Jerry McCabe.
“Just think about that for a minute, the inconsistency of that.
We seem to have a fixation for violence in one specific geographic location only
I welcome what the Government has done but I have to say, along with many other people, I have serious reservations about the timing of our decision," he said.
“There is every danger that Hamas is perceiving it right now as a reward for what it carried out on October 7. Let there be no doubt about it: Hamas began this current conflict. This current round of an age-old conflict was started by Hamas.
“It sickens me to see the video clips of what they did to young, vibrant women out celebrating a concert. They were humiliated, degraded, raped.
“Unfortunately, Hamas got cheers for doing that from a large sector of the Palestinian community. I think that must be borne in mind by the pro-Palestinian lobby here."
He said he did not condone the level of Israeli violence being unleashed in Gaza, adding that if he did so, “I will be immediately accused of being genocidal.
“That is what happens if one lifts one's head above the parapet and offers even a slightly different perspective that is not approved of by the pro-Palestinian lobby and the pro-Hamas lobby, both of which are very strong in their voice in this country at the moment.”

And Michael Collins every year at béal na bláth
>These were “people who massacred thousands of people in our own country, including thousands of people of the Catholic faith
Fundamentally incorrect on even the basics for a start
>commemoration services for the Provisional IRA
He’s also very careful to single out the provisionals which is ironic since he’s trying to call out what he thinks is hypocrisy related to violence.
>Let there be no doubt about it: Hamas began this current conflict.
Again, fundamentally incorrect.
>That is what happens if one lifts one’s head above the parapet and offers even a slightly different perspective that is not approved of by the pro-Palestinian lobby and the pro-Hamas lobby
Very much sounds like he’s a Zionist but just doesn’t have the balls to say it.
Apart from all that, trying to portray the actions of the PIRA as somehow equivalent to what is being classed by many human rights orgs and governments as genocide is wildly dishonest.
tl,dr:
” He said he did not condone the level of Israeli violence being unleashed in Gaza, adding that if he did so, “I will be immediately accused of being genocidal.”
Did he compare Hamas to the IRA?
Fianna Fáil scumbags the nerve on them calling themselves the Republican Party
>Let there be no doubt about it: Hamas began this current conflict. This current round of an age-old conflict was started by Hamas.
Another israeli state apologist trying to peddle the idea that this all started in October 2023
> Fianna Fáil senator: ‘Highly ironic’ that many condemning violence in Gaza also commemorate the IRA
Me: ‘Highly ironic’ that those condemning those commemorating the Provisional IRA have no problem commemorating the War of (Partial) Independence
Does he not understand the what irony means?
Good old hypocrisy and revisionist history with a bit of utter stupidity thrown in. The Israeli’s are analogous to the British, I see no irony in condemning their disgusting behaviour.
>These were “people who massacred thousands of people in our own country, including thousands of people of the Catholic faith, and [people] seem to have no difficulty in balancing those two.
337 Catholics were killed by the IRA, 444 by Republican groups in general. Not “thousands”.
The CAIN is easy and free to use. In any case, how far has the anti-Treaty IRA fallen. Liam Mellows, Constance Markievicz and even Dev must be weeping looking at the current state of their party.
His Party’s former leader literally bought guns for the IRA
