A debate between NATO allies about whether to take a more aggressive role in protecting Ukraine’s skies, including by directly shooting down Russian missiles and drones, has picked up steam in recent weeks.
“Whether it’s done by NATO or NATO countries … that’s one of the issues we want to have a discussion on,” one European official said. A senior NATO official told Semafor that “a lot of these discussions” are not taking place collectively at the NATO level but rather between individual member states.
The conversation has been ongoing inside the alliance for some time but “took on a little bit more realism” after the US and allies shot down Iranian drones bound for Israel back in April, said Kurt Volker, a former US ambassador to NATO.
But the proposal has significant roadblocks and is a divisive idea within the alliance. Poland and Romania are “very interested” in the idea, Volker said, but he noted that the US and Germany have been resistant to it due to the risk of drawing NATO directly into a conflict with Russia.
When asked about the possibility of NATO air defenses shooting down missiles over Ukraine at a meeting of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly this week, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg replied that “the more you are supportive of Ukraine, the more cautious we should be to ask for things that can divide us.”
“I’m not holding my breath right now with regard to actively providing air defense for Ukraine from NATO countries,” a second European official said, citing Washington’s opposition to Western countries getting directly involved in military operations. “European nations will look to the US for leadership, and I feel that we are not yet in a place where the US would seriously reconsider the whole strategy around Ukraine.”
Poland, which borders western Ukraine, has repeatedly signaled that such a policy is under consideration. Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Shejnahas has said that NATO is analyzing whether “missiles should be shot down when they are very close to the NATO border.”
“For the time being, no decisions have been made in this matter,” a spokesperson for the Polish Ministry of National Defense told Semafor, noting that “the possible coverage of part of Ukraine’s territory by allied air defense is an extremely complex issue.”

There’s nothing to debate…just do it!
It will make them a part of the war officially, if they are ready for this , why not?
Ukraine need help to win against Russia, and this will be a big one.
No fly zone is not a new concept.
I feel like we should just use Russias “hybrid-warfare” tactics against them.
Instead of having to officially deploy NATO forces to Ukraine and engage in official acts of hostility, just send over some “international volunteers” with “donated AA equipment” or “donated fighter planes” conveniently sent with “volunteer fighter pilots” and have the whole thing be a “special detachment” of the Ukrainian army.
Russia will be like “Sigh… time to move the red line a bit further back again, this time seriously”

Russia’s shocking violations during this war prompted an update of NATO methodology. It was recently accepted that the Baltic states presumably couldn’t be held and would need to be freed, whenever attacked by Russia, however, particularly after Bucha, discussion turned towards strategies for safeguard, in light of the fact that the regular citizens there can’t be left helpless before Russian troopers

On Ukrainian soil, or above, what is stopping them from assisting by shooting down missiles and drones?
Nato need to calm down. That would mean a direct confrontation with Russia.
That would mean a steady route to nukes.

Protecting Ukraine is in no way attacking Russia!
Seems like a direct confrontation with Russia is becoming even more and more inevitable.
I was wondering why they couldn’t do this after they shot down Iranian missiles on their way to Israel. In a lot of cases they would be protecting civilian. Consider it a humanitarian mission.
Wouldn’t the solution be to just provide Ukraine with a shot load of Patriots or similar systems. Then we remain hands off and Ukraine gets what they need.
I would do it and call it a humanitarian effort preventing innocent civilians from dying at the hands of terrorists.
Probably debate until the was is over.
The EU and NATO as a whole is showing amazing restraint considering the Russians have many outside nations fighting it’s war for them . Chinese, Africans Nepalis? And even Indians!
Russia says it’s already in a full on war with NATO. Might as well show them what it really looks like.

Russia ain’t gonna nuke anyone over NATO intercepting missiles and drones heading towards Ukraine. They won’t be happy, but they ain’t gonna do anything about it.
Russia is shooting at civilians and dumping chemicals on soldiers and there is a “debate” about anything?
Missiles and drones aren’t Russian nationals, and it’s not like they’re strapping Russians to the missiles (yet), so I don’t see anything wrong with this.
They are killing humans. We should protect them. Debate over.
About effing time
This needs to happen and is easy to justify as it would purely be defensive and in many cases protect innocent civilians because unfortunately Russia does intentionally target civilians.
I hope they don’t accidentally hit the odd helicopter or fighter jet!
