Far-right candidates will ‘get a shock’ come election count day, says O’Gorman

  1. Well he will probably be right. I suspect the same can be said of the greens.

  2. Far-right isn’t going to get traction without a leader to convince people. None of the current bunch could do that.

  3. Great idea for not-so-popular politicians to goad those cunts on, always works out so well come election time…

I think these right wing freaks are going to do a lot better than people expect, and much better than they’ve ever done before in Ireland. Not table-turning, by any measure, but I think this idea that they’ll be struggling along with a handful of pity votes like before is just naive.

  4. What garbage.

He’s going to get a shock because a good few of these clowns are going to get elected. And that’s going to be in very large part due to the absolute shambles he has made of his brief.

The Ukrainian response has been a complete disaster. Way too generous benefits initially meaning we took far too many, taking every spare hotel room in the country so that now we have massive amounts of international protection applicants homeless on the streets because there is no spare capacity anywhere.

So now the answer is to uproot all those Ukrainians that have put down roots and turf them out?

If you had done it properly in the first place, we wouldn’t have these problems.

  5. While I think he’s probably right, this kind of thinking is thoroughly unhelpful especially approaching elections.

They’ve already got far too much traction so instead of arrogantly and publically dismissing their chances, (Trump in 2015 anyone?) why not genuinely address the concerns that are driving the ignorant towards the right.

  6. There are a very small number of people in Ireland who don’t want to see any migration at all. And if you ask them, ‘Well, how will our hospital service work? How will our care service run?’ They don’t have any answer.

He’s trying to equate legal necessary migration again with the ones coming in illegally or seeking asylum. They can barely speak English never mind running our hospitals.

  7. Unfortunately, I don’t think they will.

The immigration issue is a hot topic right now and more than a few people are going to vote for any candidate who wants to hit immigration hard – irresepctive of their background, ideas (or lack of ideas) criminal record or whether nor not the y make a modicum of common sense.

    Really hope I’m wrong though.

  8. They aren’t organised, more fracturing and infighting than the left.

  9. People are angry about immigration at the moment, but with so many flyers coming in the door talking about homophobic, anti-vax shit as well as immigration I can see a lot of the independents getting feck all votes. The immigration issue has come up fast, but half the country didn’t just have their brain removed regarding the other bullshitty positions.

  10. Ah yes, this man has never eaten his words before! Thanks for dooming us all Roderic!

  11. I would actually say a good few will probably get votes. Just looking at the extreme side of things to the moderate side you can see alot of people want immigration reform. You see alot of right wing nut jobs going who will probably get no votes but the more moderate ones will.

  12. That’s all they need is a challenge and for people to be lulled into a false sense of security.

It also doesn’t have to be an overnight change, we should not be happy that they are running at all .

  13. It’s not just far right candidates too. McNamara is critical of our immigration policy and performance of our government on it but I wouldn’t call him far right. Pretty certain he’ll get elected too.

  14. I think the tide is turning, a lot of people, who just are not vocal about it are starting to seek a change. Wouldn’t be calling people far right, just sounds silly at this stage but I think there will be a considerable shock to the establishment in the elections.

  15. Will they though? I can’t imagine many genuinely expect to win even at the local level, or even care to. They don’t care to be the ones figuring out how to pay to get potholes repaired, and they could make similar money as a bank teller.

  16. I think the government is out of touch and the electorate is angry. That is a potent mix that could see many a supposedly “far right” person elected.

  17. Can this fella really think this is good logic – basically “I might be useless and have less charisma than a wet towel but I’m better than the loonies this time out” – he’s correct, but that’s not much of a reliable floodgate against the potential undermining of our political system.

Absolutely the far right won’t get far this election but they certainly have come further than the last election, if not much in votes, in resources and followers. As others have said, they only thing they are missing is a charismatic leader that is able to get them behind one united banner.

The only thing that’s different here is that we’re about 7-10 years behind the rest of Europe (as we are in relation to almost everything).

  18. All going well both the absolute headbangers and this sellout fucker will both be in for a shock

  19. UK-based expat here.

Have FF/FG done anything to help younger folks or anyone approaching middle age? Have they built houses or anything? I know PR is a robust system but they can’t keep playing keep away with the executive forever.

  20. He’s probably correct

Still, the know nothing component will eat into Sinn Fein’s base vote

  21. I do think they’ll gain but they’re not organised enough to gain a lot. If they calmed down on other rhetoric and focused purely on immigration they’d probably do better too.
