New corkage policy for newly Michelin awarded restaurant, what do my fellow Londoners think of it?
Do you BYOB when going out at a restaurant?

  1. Fair play. I like the transparent approach, compared to journos fishing for content

  2. I wouldn’t dream of bringing a bottle to a fancy restaurant tbh. Or any restaurant.

Either it’s a halfway decent place and the wine list is curated to match the food and ethos of the restaurant, so why would I want to bring my own, or it’s a more casual joint and it would be weird to bring a fancier bottle. Edit: or a dry establishment in which case I can forego alcohol for *one meal*.

In this case it’s a place with a very obvious focus on wines, why would you go there to drink your own plonk? Their wine list is 21 pages and goes from £50 to £5,000 there’s really nothing for you on it? Then don’t go.

  3. I take it these restaurants wouldn’t then make any money on people that don’t drink? Unless they serve non-alcoholic wine, but then would you prepared to pay so much?

  4. Ridiculous. There should be a charge and you should ask first. In London that charge will be higher than the rest of the country. Fully understand they make money on the wine too though seeing 4x mark-ups on retail (not even wholesale) rates is now becoming common and frustrating.

They can fuck off though at £100 + buying a £100 bottle at their mark-up. They probably are losing money, a lot of these higher end restaurants with more staff than seats are. Personally tired of 10 course tasting menus and much happier somewhere with 2 chefs, 2 servers and a pot washer putting out small plates or 3 courses at a fair price to make things achievable for them.

  5. I understand why they’re doing it from their view but ffs businesses just feel so unwelcoming nowadays. They want your money but don’t want you there.

  6. This is aimed at all of the people who bring bottles of Ernest and Julio Gallo… Someone who rocks up with a 1973 Dom Perignion (bonus points if you get the reference ;)) won’t mind that corkage charge.

  7. Who the fuck rocks up at a restaurant with their own wine? I dont have any issue with them doing this if people have been taking the piss

  8. Lol, Dorian thinking it’s a good enough restaurant to justify those bullshit terms.

  9. Fuck off. I’m in Italy right now. There’s more nightlife in this tiny fucking village I’m in, than I’ve seen in London for years (excluding soho, which is best avoided).

Just serve food and drinks and stop all the mind games
