This church is a major feature of the eminently visitable museum complex in the city of Drohobych in Western Ukraine. Drohobych is the second-largest city in the Lviv region by population.
One of the best-preserved wooden churches in Ukraine, the Church of St. George (Tserkva Sviatoho Yura) is a magnificent example of this unique architectural style and is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site related to wooden churches in the Carpathian region.
It was built without any nails, believe it or not! Adding to the enigma, part of the church was actually shipped in from another town in the region of Ivano-Frankivsk, and it was paid for with salt. That’s because Drohobych was one of the major salt production centers of Europe for a very long time.
But more on that later… we will be writing a short series on the city of Drohobych next week, so please stay tuned!
P.S.: if you look in the second image, you can see a very distinct depiction of Mary with upturned hands; this iconography matches the famous “Oranta” that adorns the walls of the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv. The mural in Kyiv was painted around the year 1011 when the cathedral was first built.. We wrote a bit more about this [in this post from Day 61](https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/ubaxo6/545_eest_the_sun_is_rising_on_the_61st_day_of_the/).
