  1. An equitable platform would wipe the floor with idiots like this CEO and his shit company. Here’s a crazy idea create a platform that pays the artists exceptionally well – quality of content will go up, more artists to choose from etc. This whole fleece anything and everyone with an iota of talent will not last forever

  2. Not if you want that polished sound on your music. Delusional. Also a good producer costs.

  3. I only have Spotify because all of my artists are on there. I was just thinking today that if I went broke and could only keep one subscription, it would be Spotify.

With that said, if something else was created that cost a little more and is more equitable for artists, I’d cancel Spotify in a heartbeat.

  4. There’s a weird and surprisingly common assumption that artists create work instantly, effortlessly and at no personal cost. Every type of creative freelancer has stories about clients refusing to believe their projects required as much time and effort as they’re being billed for. It’s a bummer the Spotify guy shares this attitude, but not at all surprising.

  5. It costs fucking time to get good. That is time when people could be working another job.
Fuck this sociopathic way of thinking.

  6. It costs time and money to produce art. Guitars are expensive. Drum sticks. Computers and software. Internet. A place to record. It all costs money.

  7. What a stupid comment. Even if you are a bad musician and don’t make it, you spend so many hours trying to make it, time is the most valuable asset in anyone’s life, the cost is enormous

  8. We really need to get out the pitchforks and torches soon.

  9. That old saying, Time = Money. How about all the time and effort put into honing your skill and craft, only to be told that it shouldn’t take that long.

  10. How about we all just buy things from the artists again? Streamers have created another layer of management stealing the labor of the artists.

  11. The *real* art is Spotify’s AI DJ. Now *that* is something we all agree we should be paying for.

  12. Cool, so the CEO of an international, multi-million dollar company doesn’t know what an opportunity cost is.

  13. How can you be this out of touch? Like I get that he’s a business guy and it’s easy to think this way but this demonstrates such a gross lack of understanding of his own product.

  14. Recently switched to Apple Music because of how shitty Spotify is to artists. Tried using Tidal, but the app was really bad in comparison. Apple seemed like a middle ground between app quality and pay to artists.

    Fuck Spotify.

  15. To think like Spotify CEO it cost you zero. You need to be stupid! And that’s zero!

  16. The best way to financially support your favorite artists if they have a page for it is band camp. They without a doubt take the smallest cut of any streaming service I’ve seen and it allows you to support the artist more directly.

  17. Operating costs of spotify is “close to zero”. There fixed it

  18. “Content” ? In the 90s the budget for a 10 song studio album with a major label was $130,000 and had to be reimbursed before earning a dime as an artist. Source: Frank Zappa

  19. I’m an artist that produces and engineers their own music, so I save on that front, but most artists don’t. I was charging $70/hour when I was engineering a decade ago, and I can’t imagine what people are willing to pay today for studio time. My first tour cost me almost $20k up front and I barely broke even by the end, but most artist’s first few tours they take losses. I have around $50k in recording equipment today, but it still costs money to get started. An extremely low end setup is still running you a couple thousand dollars, and that includes a computer that can’t do much of anything besides basic tracking. I’d be willing to wager that I invested nearly six figures before I even started to make any money off of music, this guy is completely delusional.

  20. “You exist to make me money. There is no art. There is just what makes money and what doesn’t. Shut up and keep churning out shit that I can extract value from. Don’t like that? Do something about it. Except you won’t. Cause you’re worthless and you know it. If you wanted to be rich you should’ve figured it out like me and the people I have lunch with. It’s not my fault you’re worthless. If you weren’t, you’d be rich like me. So fuck you and get back to work. You are cattle, and you’re lucky I even bother talking to you at all.”

  21. this guy can only talk about art in terms of dollars and cents, kinda sad really

  22. Streaming anything sucks. I hate where everything’s headed.

  23. I’ve defended Spotify somewhat in the past because the labels fucking over the artists payments are a big factor in that as far as I’ve heard, but it’s like he’s trying to sound like a villain with this quote, Jesus
