Mystery syndrome – Why are refugee children falling into comas? | DW Documentary

A Roma family from Kosovo hopes for asylum in Sweden. The young son dreams of escaping his oppressive everyday life in a spaceship on Mars. Meanwhile his sisters have fallen into a mysterious, stress-induced coma.

The sisters Ibadeta and Djeneta are both teenagers. Their family, Roma from Kosovo, is trying to obtain asylum in Sweden. The outcome of the asylum procedure is uncertain. Fear of deportation, money worries – all this leads to a mysterious illness in the sisters: it is known as “resignation syndrome” and occurs again and again in children and young people who are going through asylum procedures and are threatened with deportation. The family is trying to build a normal life far from their original home in Kosovo, where they suffered persecution. While the parents strive to save their daughters from death and wait for news about their immigration status, the youngest son Furkhan dreams of traveling far beyond the snow-covered surroundings of his current home, to a peaceful life in the vastness of space. Furkhan wants to build a spaceship and leave the difficult reality behind him – his sick sisters, his precarious situation as a refugee. The idea of ‘waking up on Mars’ is a metaphor for the fates of people who have had to leave their homeland and live in fear for their future.

    If I had all the power in the world, they could come to America and get the best healthcare and resources. Makes me sick to think millionaires and billionaires are living large, hoarding resources, and this family is fighting just to survive and belong. As many others are… What a cruel, beautiful and complicated world we live in 😔❤️

  2. What does dad do for a living? How does he contribute to the community and country? Why two daughters? The other family also has a daughter with the same issue. Any boys with this syndrome?

  6. This sounds like the 1% sprinkling some coma causing white clouds from planes onto warring countries so they can "adopt" these unfortunate innocent individuals caught in the conflict and once they fall into comas they can have there ways with them. I hope not

  9. No limb atrophy, heart rate seems high for someone in a coma, rapid eye movement, awaken after receiving residency cards, only happens to refugee kids.

    Obviously the documentary sides with it being real, so im only providing counter points. I honestly don't know. I have my healthy doses of skepticisms but i guess you have to play it safe and treat them accordingly.

  10. This "syndrome" has already been debunked more or less and it was a huge scandal here in Sweden some years ago now. Miraculously all children recovered when the families were granted asylum and permanent residence. It was also discovered that they recovered within a day or two when separated from their parents with only supervised contact allowed. It was quite clear from the beginning that this was a tactic by the parents to gain asylum and the children had to suffer for it. A few years ago a couple of these children, who were now over 18, confirmed in an interview that they were forced by their parents.

  11. Apatiska flykting barn is a scandal here in sweden. They fake to stay here. Proven false a long time ago. Also proven any tjrow away id-cards and pretend to be under 18 to stay

  13. So sad in the beginning. And just gets more depressing then surprise tearful joy. Such a beautiful film. Then you see all the ignorant jerks in the comments. So, Europeans haven't changed one bit since WWII.

  19. Assyrian girls who were enslaved and used as sex slaves by ISIS (the American/Isr*eli proxy) fell on to the ground while playing, started sleeping, then got back up again like nothing happened. Very detailed story on this in Nytimes. Keep in mind these kids were 5-8 years old.

    It is the body's way of blocking traumatic thoughts.

  26. Firstly,they are not refugees,in Kosovo theres no war since 30 years.Second,theyre Gypsies not Roma.3rd,the ladies are making it on purpose,theres no such thing as going to a coma out of stress🤣🤣

  27. This syndrome is fake. I think the video that was made which shows the families being exposed might be here on YT but I'm not sure. The children all miraculously recovered when their families got asylum.

  33. 04:27 The child knew perfectly well that the lights would come on a few seconds later. I've seen those powers in other children; they predict the future moments before.

  38. You know this is nonsense because every single child that previously had this mysteriously "woke up" soon after their family was given asylum.

    Its fake.
