“I’ll be home soon, mom”: Ukraine, Russia exchange prisoners of war for 1st time in nearly 4 months

1. Ukrainian POWs are so obviously extremely malnourished & unhealthy, meanwhile Russian POWs seem well-nourished & healthy, mirror opposites of each other. It's clear who the "good guys" are in this conflict just based on the way they treat their POWs alone, but there's plenty more evidence than that for the unconvinced. Heck, just look at how the soldiers treat their comrades, how the commanders on the battlefield treat those under their command. And see/hear how differently the Ukrainians & Russians treat, think & speak about the civilians & non-combatants who are the countrymen/women of their opponents.

   Ponder these questions: What country has the right to invade its neighboring country both unprovoked & without any legal justification under the rules of international law? Which country started this war, or so-called "Special Military Operation", by sending soldiers across its borders to launch an invasion into another sovereign nation in order to further the invading country's (and/or its leader's) own interests? In the days & weeks following February 24th, 2022, which country's actions were almost unanimously condemned by the member-states of the UN? Which of the 2 countries involved in this conflict has a warrant issued for their president's arrest by the ICC for the commission of war crimes up to & including the illegal deportation/kidnapping of at least 19,000 Ukrainian children ? Which country's soldiers have, since the very beginning of their full-scale invasion, been committing carefully documented, strictly vetted, legally corroborated, stringently verified war crimes & crimes against humanity?

   Ask yourself this: Why are the soldiers in Russia's armed forces occupying/invading/attacking Ukraine (almost) exclusively one or more of the following – people brainwashed or deluded by endless & inescapable state-sanctioned propaganda who voluntarily enlisted, coerced or otherwise forcibly conscripted soldiers usually from extremely rural areas and/or belonging to ethnic minorities, inmates of criminal mental institutions or prisoners convicted of the most vile & heinous crimes imaginable who were promised their release and/or full pardons in return for their military service, or foreign nationals/migrant workers hoodwinked into signing military service contracts, many/most told they'd be serving in non-combatant roles far from the front-lines, in return for empty promises of money which would provide desperately needed food, shelter & other necessities for their families back home and/or offered a better life for them & their immediate family members in Russia, as they'd receive Russian citizenship & be set up with nice new homes and nice new well-paying jobs in Russia – just as soon as their term of service in the Russian military is done?

   Then ask yourself: Why does Ukraine have soldiers who (almost, maybe?) exclusively voluntarily enlisted in order to defend their country's sovereignty, democracy, territorial integrity, culture, language, history, all or some of the aforementioned, and/or to protect & defend the people & places they love & care about most in this world? And why were there so many people who, even before 2014 or 2022, were already serving voluntarily in Ukraine's Territorial Defence Forces, air defence, naval defence, or special operations forces, & Ukraine's national intelligence services? Why are Ukraine's defenders not soley shoehorned into the country's "official" military services & also include personnel from Ukrainian federal, regional, provincial, & local law enforcement agencies, as well as civil defence brigades, other civilian first responders & medical professionals, and also just members of the regular, everyday Ukrainian citizenry? (Plus the foreign legion voluntary fighter corps & numerous foreign combat medics, logistics specialists, and various foreign military & medical training experts.)

   Think about this: What are all of these Ukrainians (and foreigners) fighting so valiantly for & defending with such selflessness? What could be worth putting themselves at such immense risk, when the potential costs are so vast? Is there anything in you'd be willing to go to the same lengths fighting for, or anything worth putting yourself at such an enormous risk to protect & defend?

   Final question: If the reason why the defenders of Ukraine are fighting, if what they're protecting & defending from their Russian invaders is truly as vile (or ridiculous) as what the Russians have claimed it to be, even if it was everything the Russians have claimed it was at some point, even if the Russian claims were all true all together simultaneously, wouldn't the Ukrainian forces be conducting themselves & prosecuting this war just like, or in an extremely similar manner to, the way that the Russian forces have been doing so thus far (or worse)?

   There is an obvious good vs evil, (or hero vs villain, in box-office parlance) dynamic at play in this conflict, even a blind person could tell you that. Which country do you want to be victorious, and what do you think your answer says about you as a person? Do you like what you're saying about yourself? If not, you can still do something to change your answer. You should do that before it's too late and you're forever a person of the sort you'd rather not be.

4. The Kiev authorities send the returned soldiers to the front line, which is contrary to the norms of humanism, as well as the Geneva Convention.
   
   Many mothers and wives of Ukrainian soldiers who have been captured ask not to return them to their homes, as the Kiev authorities will again send these people to the front line, essentially dooming to death.
   
   Article 117 of the Geneva Convention states that repatriated prisoners of war cannot be used in military service.
   
   This is contrary not only to the moral standards of humanism and mercy, but also to the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, under which no repatriated person may be used in active service.

5. Former POWs cannot fight again as part of their conditions for release. Of course Ukraine violates this for years; many of the last holdouts in Avdiivka were former POWs.
