Imagine insisting that people refer to you as the “Labour Party” even though you are more Tory than a true Blairite.
Wonder what multi millionaire Blair thinks of that
Won’t this be prone to misuse as it starts as a humble tax and later over time, it becomes something where subsequent governments would tinker and make into something unpleasant? It is similar to tuition fees or visa fees to take from recent examples.
A fixed wealth tax so in twenty years we all pay it. Why not concentrate on wealth creation?
They should be called the Welfare party. If you have a job, Labour will eventually take your money and give it to scroungers and bogus asylum seekers.
A wealth tax works fine in countries where most of the population have wealth, it doesn’t seem entirely useful in the UK at the moment and I have my doubts Starmer’s Labour would even do this, or do it correctly if they tried.
You can’t just add a wealth tax, you also need to cut other taxes while you do it. It’s a massive rebalancing and reshaping act to ensure fairer tax distribution across the whole population. But right now all it would likely do is fuck the already struggling middle-class and higher earning working class who are struggling due to the recent inflation issues. It’s usually a nice bonus for anyone in debt or willing to take on debt though as it counts as negative wealth (so people newly on the property ladder etc), and as a result a lower tax bill.
But it really depends on what specific system they would go for.
