France sends police and military reinforcements to riot-hit New Caledonia • FRANCE 24 English

these French forces have been given a mission clearing out roadblocks set up by new caledonia’s pro-independence riers this neighborhood located north of Numa the capital has been inaccessible for days the easiest way to take down the burning barricade running over it with an armored vehicle dozens of road blocks have been removed but pro-independence activists say this will not resolve the crisis for now though they’ve called on protesters to ease their blockade of some of the roads we will travel to each neighborhood every area to meet with our people and ask to loosen the grip on the main roads this way fuel can be brought to our people in all areas and medicine too so that people can be treated get their medication and their dialysis this authorities have ordered pro-independence leaders to remain in their homes but those leaders who have met with President Emanuel Macon have asked for that order to be lifted so they can at least tell residents what they’ve heard from the French President the crisis was triggered when the French government decided to move forward with voting reforms it was also fueled by economic disparities between the indigenous kanak popul population and residents of European descent president maon said he does not want to push the reform by force and now favors dialogue

France has enforced a state of emergency, flying in hundreds of police and military reinforcements to restore order in the overseas territory of New Caledonia which has seen mass protests and riots over the past weeks that resulted in several deaths. The deadly violence erupted over a French voting reform plan that indigenous Kanaks say will dilute their voice.

  1. Every time there has been a referendum on independence the vote was “No”. If you look at comparable state like PNG it is riddled with corruption and nepotism. New Caledonia is much better off as a dependency.

  2. If people want to stay with france then why does France need to send French troops? Is there no police in New Caledonia?

  3. There have recently been 2 referendums on independence , both resulted in a vote to stay with france , just because a minority decides to become violent doesnt mean the will of the majority should be trampled on . If the french pulled out NC would become another haiti

  4. 😂😂😂 local kanaks want peace because they cant get their free meds and welfare payments from france through the roadblocks

  5. France, Marcon, you have blood in your hands. Pls leave the Islands, to the aborigines. Being poor and peacefully happy, is better than unrest. Return the island to the natives
